Personally, for $500 I'd get a new (to me!) pistol (or half a suppressor), and my kick around messenger bag works just fine, but recognizing that some of us are married to or related to the trendier set, and have the cash to spare... My girlfriends love these bags.

I got my wife an XDm 9mm about 5 years ago. She went to the range 2-3 times since then and I'm the only one that cleans it. She won't pay any attention when I try and show her how to take it apart. My 8 year old daughter however knows more about all the guns in my house than most of the soldiers I have ever met so no I just get my wife "girly things" and in a few years my daughter will get ammo as a stocking stuffer.

Like you, I think flowers and chocolate are great but above necessities are greater.
I never bat an eyelid upon receiving a cordless drill for mother's day or a birthday.
