New Here
My name is Rob. I've been out of the Army for a little over a year now. Spent 2rs in Iraq, 1yr in Afghanistan. I've been having many issues (anger, depression, fear of betrayal, hypervigilance, etc.. etc... etc...) It's become such an issue I'm surprised I haven't found myself dead or in jail by now. I recently started going to the VA and just began treatment. I've pushed away or scared away everyone that's ever cared about me in the last couple years and can't even begin to explain the turmoil I've made out of this thing we call, "life". Can anyone tell me if the VA appointments are worthwhile and if so what kind of treatments can/will be offered?

Im British so i wouldnt know about the VA's procedures, brothers will be along soon to give you advice but in the meantime welcome mate, your not alone in this.

It seems to be hit or miss with the VA, but it is worth a shot. Also the only real show in town any of us can afford. I'm just starting my paper chase with them. It's been over 20 years so I have to do a bit more. You are lucky in one way, in that you should have all your records in order. Mine are in deep storage somewhere.

One of our members recommends a site called hadit.com. I believe thats the site. Good for questions about the VA with non-VA people.

There is also a wealth of info here, so take a look around.

Welcome to the club.

Hey Rob

Welcome to the forums. As far as the VA is concerned you have to be proactive about your own treatment. The VA has many treatment options available today so this is what I'd suggest, if I may. First, if you can go to a Vet center, outpatient treatment center rather than a large VA hospital you might find it easier to navigate as it's smaller and many times you get more people actually interested in helping. With a system as large as the VA's it's easy to just become a number at a one of the huge places. Make sure that your psychologist or doctor is someone you can talk to and that you feel has your best interests in mind. That will take some time to sort out but if you don't feel confident with the person treating you, you'll have a harder time succeeding with your treatment. If that's so, request another therapist or doctor, that's your right to do that. Do your homework. Research the treatment options and or meds they want to prescribe.

Try to keep in mind that any treatment for PTSD and any other problems or wounds that you have will take time and won't always be pleasant. It's the outcome that you have to focus on, the goal. Always remember that the VA is the largest gov't employer and a monstrously large and convoluted system. Stay focused, stay calm and above all stay the course.

Recognize that there will be problems but you can get them solved. It's a system and you have to work with what's there. It does take time. They're there for us, that's their purpose for existing. There's much info here about dealing with both them and our shared condition. Best of luck Rob and I'm glad you made it back Brother.

Hi Rob Welcome to the best site to help with ptsd imo. lots to read and good people here. Maybe give the video aout stress a watch is worth the time. I am involved with a homeless VA program and I hate.. HATE the VA but they are the only show in town.

Cummon in, Rob, pull up a chair and join in. My experiences with the VA haven't been the best either, BUT that was my VA hosp. and years ago. Go anyway. You need to get into the system in case you file a claim later. I can give you websites that help in that area, should you decided to do so.

You also need to get into the system so you can get your meds through the VA and if you live X miles (I'd have to look up the new regs to see how many) they pay you travel pay but you have to ask for it.

You know the old saying, "you have to know your enemy, to defeat him". well it applies here. This site has a wealth of information, videos and such to get you started with your battle with the beast (PTSD).

You appear in your Avatar to be still a young man. Good! Jumping on this thing immediately after your service greatly increases your odds of not only lessening it's symptoms but the trama you'll experience in the long run.

Take heart, Rob, much knowledge has been gained over the mistakes they made with us Nam Vets.
