I remember the pork patty being so bad even starving dogs wouldn't eat. One mangy mutt even peed on it. I think the c-rations were better. Which isn't saying much.

ya most of the MRE's were bad, chicken a la king was better by far, not saying it was good but with the choice of restaurants in the desert, I went with it lol...

My dad had a couple of cases of C-rats he picked up for hurricane season... I was about 11 yrs old and one day he was furious when he looked in the boxes, I had opened every single one of them and took the chiclets gum from the ones that had it... he should have been glad I didn't smoke the 2 cigarettes that a lot of them had in em... he was looking at the glass as half empty...

Beef stew wasn't bad in the C-rats.. a bit earthy but hey... and I wish I still had one of those John Wayne can openers...

What ever happend to map reading. I know a German guy here, when he go`s on a trip he actualy takes 2 Navi`s with him, just to be sure the one doesn`t get it wrong ??!! WTF I still use a map most days, yeah its old, but place names and a direction suffice.

I dunno. My nickname in 'Nam was "pathfinder". It was a satirical reference to my ability with map and compass. There were five guys who spent a long night squatting in a swamp due to my insisting on taking the point (oh to be eighteen again and to possess perfect knowledge of everything)

Supply used to dump a load of c-rats for us to pick thru prior to a patrol. I quickly learned to go for the cheese and crackers. Few things worse than waiting in a night ambush and suddenly having to use the facilities. Sometimes I'd grab a whole box, but if you were going out for three, five days those suckers were heavy. Only folks with MRE's when I was in-country were the LRRP's

LRRP's...now there is a term I have not had in my head for a while...some times they would get made.....it is really strange to fly into a LZ that is in the process of getting cut out of the bush with C4...charges go off...trees fall....the guys are coming aboard almost before the trees hit the ground...rotor blades clipping shit as you get out...fun stuff...no one got hurt that night....big shit eatin grins all round...it was not all bad!!! f*cking Jarheads...you got to love em.
