Omg- Sexist Psychiatrist

@Rain: Thank you. I know, I wrote a thesis on stigma; and how psychiatric constructs are gender based and by very definition sexist. I am not lying. Little did I know that I would be defending my thesis in a psychiatrists office when I have been struggling for long time and deserved his utmost respect. Instead I got contempt and yes, I am writing the complaint for all of his patients who sat their and agreed with him. I am sorry Dr. Curtis but I don't agree. Thanks Rain!

Hey, I believe you about EVERYTHING you said. I have no doubts what so ever about what you said happened. I'm just proud that you are able to articulate your experience and stand up for yourself. I see that as an amazing gift you have that will serve to many before you and those that come after.

Being an abuse victim of a father in the field I understand the damage that can be done. So I am cheering you on, I hope you get that. :tup:

I am an accomplished human being; extremely smart and educated. I have had a professional career, am an athlete, an artist; full of accomplishment and he reduced me ( tried to) into a " mental health consumer

You do sound very educated and intelligent! And I think the more educated & intelligent we are the more difficult it is to find good, professional treatment because we can see right through their bullshit when they're dishing it out.

This has been my personal experience. I have come to shake my head with dismay the shit they try to pull on people. Unfortunately it's the socioeconomically challenged and less educated that fall prey to their bullshit, ignorant of what's going on. They do not like smart patients!! Of course I'm generalizing here. Obviously there are great Pdocs and therapists out there, but you really have to search.

I really hope you can put this horrible experience behind you soon, and write that letter and cc it to the the licensing board in his state.

Some people get into a position of trust just so they can abuse it, probably b/c someone did that to them. I'm a man so I can't directly compare but I had a similar problem with one, but only one, psychiatrist once. Turns out the screaming/diagnosis/prescription were the same for all of his patients. Disturbed fool.

I am socio-economically challenged which creates its own problems plus I have had some really bad luck. Its disgusting that he would speak to me like that. I am def going to write a very succinct letter- have already got 2 pages done but I am so tired. The whole thing is unbelievable. Society seems to be going to hell in hand basket. Thanks everyone I really do appreciate it! :)

(I should add: The shrink in my case had the same kind of dwarfism as someone who'd given me trouble during The Crazy Times, so I was already freaking out. Same shape to his face, although different color/race/accent/name. Everybody needs to understand: If you don't pick on kids in middle school, they won't grow up to treat you like shit in a courtroom or psych office.)

I wanted to further comment on the socioeconomically challenged part. And that is to say that I myself am socioeconomically challenged which stigmatizes us & pigeon holes us into a class that is typically mistreated by the mainstream medical community. That's my opinion anyway. And I think you felt the brunt of that recently with that horrible experience. When we are stigmatized into a certain lower class with a mental illness to boot, we are assumed not to have a brain in our head. Which creates it's own problems that you referred to. You are not alone!
