Well, the little boy had a little bit of surgery yesterday. :whistling: Not fathering any puppies in his lifetime. I was told to "Keep him quiet for 5 to 7 days." No walks, no playing in the yard, no running around the house, only a leash to go out to do his business and then back in. I am thinking this is designed to torture me. 24 hours later and he seems to be feeling fine. The pain meds keep him from hurting enough to want to lick and chew at the incisions but also let him want to play. He is getting LOTS of things to chew but I think he is getting bored with just chewing on things. It is going to be a looong 5-7 days!!

Best of luck during his time of need...Poor little bloke will be feeling out of sorts for more reasons than one........Ouch!!! :eek:

If there are sutures, then avoid them getting wet or him licking them. Perhaps an Elizabethan collar (Plastic bucket looking thing over his head) if he starts at the stitches.

Glad you got him desexed though, there's enough dogs needing a home without any further unplanned litters appearing...Good stuff Sammy... :D

Oh Sammy, having just come out of Max being on a leash for 3 weeks, I do sympathise. I found putting a t shirt on Max worked best. Ha-ha, I've just thought for your boy the neck of the neck of the t shirt needs to go where the tail is, he will need to wear it backwards :roflmao:.

He is doing fine - not licking at himself. He is just bored out of his mind and wants to play. Evidently it doesn't hurt too much (no pain meds today!). At least not enough to slow him down. He doesn't have any external stitches so we only have to go back if there is a problem. He hasn't been doing any licking. Right now the only problem is his barking, whining and howling because he is bored. I can't even take him for a walk! He is going to make me crazy. 3 more days... he will be exploding by the time I can allow him to run around.

When I let Max run, I don't think he even remembered he'd been walked on a lead. It is funny as now after a walk he is so tired.

Well, the pup is going back to the vet today. One of his incisions is really swollen. It looks like it should hurt a lot! But, he is bouncing around and the confinement is absolutely making him insane! I guess I will find out what is going on in a few hours. It sure looks painful. Does he just not feel much pain?? I'd be curled in a ball somewhere if I had that much swelling next to an incision! He is barking at me and is so unhappy not being able to run around. I think I am going to have them sedate him if he needs more "bed rest." He is going to explode if he can't go run.

Sammy, I know it is not the same as a run. But have you tried 'treat' toys.

I give mine a ball into which you place treats, the dog has to work the ball by pushing it around to get the treats out.

Also one of the best buys ever was a 'Kong'. You pack it with treats, I push cheese down to the bottom, then add a few biscuits and treats and then pack the top with cheese, again the dog has to work to empty the 'Kong'. Kongs are expensive but IMHO are indestructable - yes, honest. My dogs have had theirs for 9 and 5 years respectively.

Then the old cheap favourite, hide a treat under a one of three plastic cups, the dog has to work out that to get the treat he needs to knock the cup over.

All of the above are to keep a dogs mind active, not the same as a run but it may help.

Hi Sammy.

Hoping it's not infected and just a small herniation at the wound. Should resolve with time and rest.

Being young and confined is a tough time for all. Keep an eye on his food intake while confined. Perhaps ask the vet about diet type and quantity needed during this period.

The vet said it is a reaction to the stitches - no infection, drainage or inflammation. It doesn't hurt him at all. She had another vet look at it and they agreed - no worries. He has managed to charm everyone in the clinic. They had him in back and I heard them all ogling him and talking about how sweet he is. They don't have the bruises I have from him! He chomped on both of my arms this morning as he kept trying to get at something I was carrying.

I have reduced his food but he is hungry all the time anyway and now he just barks at me. I fill Kongs with dog food and then freeze them. That takes quite a while for him to get it out. He also gets marrow bones that are frozen. They keep him busy for a while, too. He also gets bones filled with cheese or filled with peanut butter - anything to keep him occupied. But, he is "short, attention-span theater" and no matter what it is, he doesn't stay focused for long. Typical German Shepherd. The vet told me to give him some Benedryl. As it turns out he needs to stay quiet for another 4 days, minimum. I give him a little calm training here and there to occupy his mind a bit (he gets bored way too easy!) but the confinement is tough for such an energetic little guy. I will be glad when I can take him out for a good, long walk and some fetch in the yard.

Ouchie, well I hope your pup is soon mellowed out after a good long run! I feel for you, at least mine can go running through the house like wild animals until somebody gets hurts ..ugh! Just like kids, I swear!

I have been having a hard time and brought a new baby into our family.
