You can cut the canvas, burn it a bit, add organic textures/objects from nature, build up areas with paper or fabric, mirrors, you could even add little lights to it.

What does it look like when you cut it? Regular canvas you get from the crafts store, nothing fancy, its layered right, so i imagine if you cut it, it just opens a little right?

So expressive Ayesha ;o) I love it. I also like the character of the letters for Allah. God is deep, full of character and mysteries that we can't comprehend. Keep painting!

In Islam it is forbidden to draw God, in an form. Like we can not draw him as a human or any form. We are not even allowed to imagine what he might look like. The reason is because want to worship God, not the form.
But we are allowed calligraphy, which can be very expressive. And very hard to draw. I can do some. But it takes a long time.

i hope I'm not making anyone upset or anything, I'm just talking, and kinda of explaining. i am a very firm believer in "to each his own" I was raised that way....i do what i want, you do what you want kinda of thing...sorry i guess I'm used to being defensive.

I have trust and " I don't believe you" issues...

LOL, don't we all. Let me clarify, because specificity always helps me believe people more. I like the layering of different tones of the colors, and the shift from cool colors to warm ones. Those two things give it a depth that I find attractive. I also have an affinity for Islamic art, so I understand the importance of the calligraphy and the challenge it making it look smooth. Art is an expression of how we feel, and you captured your feelings.

It's quite wonderful- I love it! And no, noone is upset or would be with explaining things. It's very cool to know other's beliefs, and why, and just be happy to hear these beliefs give them peace, you know? In point of fact, I rather wish less people would depict Jesus, since so many of the depictions tend to be rather-well- soupy,if you know what I mean. Plus- he's always painted with light hair and eyes, like a northern European, which is historically wildly inaccurate, being a Jew from that region, in that time- probably had dark hair, eyes and skin. I think it's nice to not have some actual image, but be able to imagine for oneself.

Very good to go with your intincts on the colors, too- it IS hard to describe why something feels right, isn't it? Yours works, too- I do like it a ton!

I'm not sure if canvas would fray or not- if it's stretched canvas, it's a little thin these days and might only slice like paper. Maybe if you sort of scrape it carefully, you could get that effect? Plus, if it is a stretched canvas, a rather large slice will collapse things a little. The old, GOOD stuff is out there somewhere, I'm sure, but have no idea where that would be. I generally paint on wood.

No reason to apologize Ayesha. I love hearing what others believe and why.

In keeping with what Anni wrote about Jesus.....the pictures drawn and painted of him are probably wildly inaccurate. Not that it matters to me. And I think Islam has it right in that we are not supposed to worship an image. In fact it is strictly forbidden in the Old Testament. The Israelites were commanded not to make any engraven forms to worship. IMHO creating an image would put God in a box so to speak.

Muslim believe in the Old Testament and the Torah as well. I like the "put God in a box", i think you are right about that.

Puzzle piece painting is turning out good, but its not what I was looking for. I need more raw..I know its going to take more then one painting...but I think I have an idea for the raw one.

To bad canvas is expensive otherwise I would try lightly cutting it to see what happens.

Figured out my painting!!! The pieces are me, not my feelings. I'm broken and in pieces, so is the painting. I figured it out in the middle of the night last night, and had to finish it then.

Seeing the movie Speak ( if you want to read about that, its in the anxiety section) helped me see why I was painting it the way I was.

I can't wait to completely finish to to put in put here. I think my T will like it too. For some reason I am happy/ sad/ and completely depressed at the same time..
