An extraordinary opportunity to study memory and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a group of Air Transat passengers who experienced 30 minutes of unimaginable terror over the Atlantic Ocean in 2001 has resulted in the discovery of a potential risk factor that may help predict who is most vulnerable to PTSD.

This one is especially interesting to me, because I have always said the more emotional I am during an event, the better I recall details. Otherwise my memory is crap.

There was a fuel leak due to maintenance using an incorrect mounting bracket on a fuel pump. This caused a fuel and hydraulic line to come in contact with one another. The resulting abrasion broke the fuel line; this lead to a fuel leak on the left side

The fuel leak was first noticed as a fuel imbalance as the left fuel tank was feeding the left engine and the right fuel tank was feeding the right engine, in a configuration known as "tank to engine"

When the pilots first noticed the imbalance they didn't suspect a fuel
leak and opened the cross feed valve, according to Airbus procedure. The cross feed valve allows fuel from the right tank to flow into the left tank. As a result of the leak, They ran out of fuel and successfully glided to a nearby airport on the Pengu Islands.

Just a little background information about the incident.

Baycrest is a tremendous place. I have had the pleasure of working with them but didn't realize that it worked with trauma. They are highly regarded here in Toronto. I thank you for this article as I will look into their trauma program if they have one.

For myself after reading this article, I feel like those of us who were traumatized at a younger age (when most things were processed in a sensory way rather than with logic) have a capacity to go back to a highly sensitized state, whereas others who were not exposed in this way do not. Also, those of us who were forced to become hypervigilent due to repeated abuses at a younger age have a brain wired for being placed back into that mode. IMHO that is what makes some people more susceptible to trauma reactions than others.
