Hi. So I am going back to school. I am thinking about taking some photography courses. I am just interested in it as a hobby for the most part. I would love to become a counselor or a nurse social worker, but if I am honest with myself I know I am far from ready from that kind of stress. :/ Decisions I hate em. :( ugh I need to get out there and do something, but I would likely set myself up for failure with a job or schooling where I have to be on their time....for those days it takes forever to just get up, for those times I disadissacosiate and have flashbacks and the like. I like people and need to be around people when I have good days. Sadly I still have a long way to go.

Photography is a wonderful but very expensive hobby. If you can afford an ok perfessional digital camera, it is wonderous how you see the world.

I took classes in high school back in film days so mine takes film. We developed our own film and pictures and Id love to get back in a dark room. Its a great art thats now lost inside the digital picture editing age.

I think this is a great idea! Going back to school is great for an education and getting a better job/future but also about finding new things you enjoy, maybe making them into long term hobbies you can have and making friends with your interests in the process. My hobbies can help me can through some stressful times and I learn from them too.

Best of luck.

Hey TTMF,

I empathize with your situation.

What I find helpful is doing it as baby steps and letting the things that can happen naturally do so. I am ready when I am ready.

Looking at making schooling moves as stress, decisions, 'need to', potential failure, 'have to' and 'a long way to go' puts a lot of extra stress on ourselves.

Maybe looking at making moves as chunks, breaking it all down into manageable chunks for yourself, with the help of your therapist, could also make it seem more doable.

It's nice to read that you like something to do with photography, counseling and being a nurse social worker. I think it means you have some healthy and joyful parts of yourself.

I wish you the very best.

Thank you Lifetraveller. I also like to travel. ;) but w/2 children its not ideal. . . And yes I am so split in making this decision. Guess I am in a hurry. 23 years of trauma and I've only been getting treatment for the last year. My doctor said my PTSD was pretty bad, my first counselor said that mine was the most traumatic life story she had ever encountered. She couldn't even help me much, despite her being the first I ever trusted. It's no wonder we lose so many to the "depression " that stems from the PTSD. It really makes life feel impossible sometimes. .. like I am a kid who can only dream. In reality I am in my thirties, am a single Mother of two, and I just want to be functional, thats all I want. :( This stuff sucks.

I chose my screen name more because life is like a journey.

I do like to travel but I don't often have the money to do so.

Tough story you have... You're getting help though.

Yes, it seems impossible sometimes, emphasis on the 'seems'.

Yes, it sucks.

You're getting help, you're writing here and you really like something about those careers and hobbies you mention. Plus you like travel.

There is hope.

You are speaking my language, photography literally saved my life. It is a great hobby for anyone with a mental illness, you and the camera, mindful of the present moment, looking for interesting, creative, fun picture opportunities. I like that you are aware you are not ready to help others and you I like that you are starting to build a good foundation of self-care before you take on such a stressful job. I would also suggest that you look for volunteer opportunities in non-profits that deal with mental health issues. I think most of us have strong feelings about helping others find their way out of the this hell, but a lot of therapists are getting sick by absorbing others trauma. As my therapist said to me when I was talking about my social worker degree, "It is a sad life, I hear horrible stories all day long, a lot of people do not get well, some do not want to get well or put the effort in, some will kill themselves. Do you want to hear this everyday and face your own trauma everyday or do you want to go to a job you enjoy going to and have fun at?"

I was pissed off when she said this to me, I wanted to help others. People with mental illness feel safe talking to me and my kids friend's have come forward to talk to me about their OCD, Depression etc. If I am in the elevator at the hospital and it stops on the mental health floors, I always seem to end up having a great conversation with the patients. I really think I could reach some of the people. Heck, all my career tests things come out the same and have since high school, police, social worker, purchasing, etc.

My therapy has ended now and I am working part-time for a small company. They allow me to make my own hours, do not stress any of their employees, work on the honour system and it is an environment of trust and respect. I have always had high stress well paying positions and my ego had a lot of problems thinking my professional career was gone. However, I have to say it is freeing to go to work and come home without carrying the workday home. I worked for a company that repair battle damaged tanks for the military. I often came home carrying the weight of the day with me. I often came home carrying the weight of working with employees who just plain did not give a darn about the people in those tanks or their families. They were more interested in stepping on everyone to move up the corporate ladder. I witness, things that made my stomach turn, such as having a party to celebrate the repair of 100 battle damaged tanks, and to boot it was beside a sea container that contained the remains of a soldier. I refused to go to it but was told I needed to attend because the president was going to be there and it mandatory. Go or else. This new jobs pays about 1/3 less but I love that my job no longer follows me home.

I still help, I volunteer as a mental health outreach worker for a local non-profit. In this role I go speak about my own experiences of mental health, those wonderful aha moments where I saw the light and my symptoms improved in leaps and bounds. I also volunteer a fun group that is dedicated to planting trees. This fall I am joining a group at helps women better their lives and get out of poverty.

Anyway, I wish you well in your journey and I really think you are doing the right thing. Get a camera and go have fun. It is a really life changer and life saver.

Hey BDAR,

I really relate to working in a place where colleagues are "stepping on everyone to move up the corporate ladder".

Yuck!

I'm about to start work at a non-profit. I'm nevertheless worrying about the hierarchical structure of it. I was burned badly by a supervisor and higher ups in a public sector job a while ago.

Wish me level headedness!

It sounds like you really want to do the photography now, and that the social work is more of a life goal. I say this because the photography will improve your life right now and may help as an emotional stepping stone to the larger picture.

Yeah it will be scary being around people, but having that class will give you a few days a week interacting with people and going outside and most importantly its something you want to do. If you keep working facing your anxiety everyday it will eventually dissipate. After you've been at it for a while that list of things you've accomplished will help you feel better about yourself.

Perhaps after a while of photography you'll be comfortable enough making decisions to do that social work.

Its all a process.

btw as a painter I can vouch that the art really helps me get my more difficult feelings out and later label them.
