This landed in my garden this afternoon. I know the image is not too good as it was a quick snap through the window, then I have had to edit it as best I can so you can see it is our local pest, the Sparrow Hawk

I'm so glad you feel that way Sandra. Beautiful shot....so peaceful. I LOVE birds of prey Amethist, what a treat to have one land in your back yard!

I have seen American Bald Eagles in the same tree on the highway a few miles from our house twice now. One earlier this year and then 2 (must be a mated pair) a few weeks ago. Didn't have my camera with me either time....GRRRR! I did pull off next to the trees and get out just to stand and observe them. So beautiful!

I was heading onto the Niagara bound highway here recently and during the curve perched on the cement barricade was a red tailed hawk. What a strange place for it to perch.

the Sparrow Hawk

A very good photo amethist considering you took it through the window! I've seen a few Sparrow Hawks areound here but I have never seen them in my garden. I know they come in because I often find a bunch of feathers that have been plucked but no dead bird. I'm very jealous! :)

They have a pair of bald eagles near this raspberry mill actually on the trail there. So far the male has been too young yet to mate. Hopefully next spring it will happen. If it does, it will be the first pair to mate here in about 50 years due to the DDT episode. We got falcons back, let's hope we have good luck for the eagles too now.

When I was feeding the outdoor birds, almost everyday I had a red tailed hawk in the tree in the back yard. And an occasional great horned owl.

Nice one Amethist. You're hooked now. Lol. Really cool hobby.

BTW, for those looking to add sharpness to grainy or blurry pics...

Where the subject is for identification, and it's not really about aesthetics; gimp (image editor). Well supported, free download, runs discretely on minimal resources, very efficient and no spyware/bloatware. Open the image w/ gimp (ctrl O) and in the menu bar (top bar) under "Filters" find "Sharpen" and try the Unsharp Mask. Yep, very useful. Sometimes amazing results. If the image is lo-res it may be too strong a change.

Or, simply google: gimp tutorials, in youtube for bunches of 'em.

Good luck w/ outdoor/wildlife/nature photos, everyone!
