I'm pissed. My Uncle passed last week and on Friday one of the Captains came up and visited my wife was so impressed at how sincere he was. I find out today from my Major he was told o check on me by my Commander. What a crock of crap. Nothing annoys me more then fake people. Turns out the Captain is looking to become our new division officer and was just doing what he was told. The Military I came from we checked on people that had a death in the family or some other life crisis and cared about the people we served with.
Sorry but the reason they checked on me was to make sure my PTSD was in check. I have always performed my duties to the highest of standards and have never given them a reason to think I'd hurt myself or others. Why when they find out you have PTSD do the handle you with kit gloves? Then they say there is no stigmatism and they want you to come forward when you have a problem. Then they treat you like a second class citizen. Bailey and I are going for a walk in the rain, at least she won't judge me.

Tim, I'm so sorry, I'd feel the same if not worse.

Could it be, that 'required' or not, that Captain was sincere (as well)?
The 'brighter' spot is your Major told you the truth, which if they really wanted to, they wouldn't have.

You have your beautiful family and Bailey, that's what really counts, even more than (any) BS.

P.S- I am sorry to hear about your uncle.

Ah Tim, the perception that nobody, especially those who should, cares. Westmoreland didn't really care about those of us on the line in Vietnam in 67-68. We knew that. When he and his henchmen came to visit our firebase around Christmas 67 we mortared our own motor pool area. They left. Schwartswhatever didn't really care in Desert Storm. When the kids from the wharehouse that got hit were in the hospital, he sent a subordinate BG to visit them while he attended a political event a couple of miles away. Perception.

They may or may not care. They may or may not do whatever they do for the right reason. That's not what the perception that people who should care don't is all about for those of us with ptsd. It's about finding a deserving target for those intense feelings. And once we identify a deserving target, we act out the intense feelings and behave in ways that probably gets us in trouble in some way in our current situation.

Walking Baily while you process the intense feelings and let them pass, then returning to participate in current activities and relationships would be a very good coping strategy. Walking Baily to escape the current situation and avoid participating in appropriate relationships and activities would be isolating, which is generally not a good coping situation.

It's not about how they treat us. It's about how we treat ourselves.

Uggh that is so frustrating when they act like you are a ticking time bomb! When my husband was still in he got the same crap sometimes...Flippin' John Wayne bull crap... usually dished out by some stateside troll....ok..maybe I have a little hostility..taking deep breath...holding...release breath... ;) ok...anyway... Know exactly what you are talking about...sorry about the rant.

Condolences. You have the right to join the many of us vets that have to deal with the VA. I got to a point tired of banging my head into a steel re-inforced brick wall I decided the best for me was to stop their idea of treatment and use civilian docs.
