Vhales... family and friends really didn't know what to do to help me... I went through the same thoughts and feelings . I am coming out of a period right now where I've had nightmares then later trauma memories for several years. My shrink thinks the same thing about meds and many meds don't mix well with alcohol anyways. Part of the fatigue can be depression too... I was so focused on the nightmares, that I ignored that component for a long time.
Start doing little things... noncaffinated drinks only after 4 pm, a cup of celestial seasons sleepy time tea after dinner worked pretty well for me. Switching up some things that I found calming... like a long hot bubble bath or a mini massage from my husband before bedtime helped to put me in a place more condusive to sleep too. I found my husband's voice calming and it is our habit now for him to read to "us" each evening before we sleep... sometimes just a few paragraphs, sometimes a whole chapter. (My husband had an undiagnosed learning disability and was only reading at a 7th grade level. We've been reading "together" for about 5 years... and it's a mutual benefit and we learn something "together"... he's now at college level, and I get something pleasant put into my mind before sleep).
It can get better and manageable... so very glad you're feeling more settled today!
