Something truly incredible happened today.

I’ve been considering quitting my ABA (Australian Bachelor of Arts) because the unpredictable nature of my chronic illness and C-PTSD keeps me housebound most of the time. I never know when I can make it out, so it’s hard to attend lectures and tutorials with any regularity anymore.

Today I thought I’d give it one last try and contact the university’s Equality and Diversity Center to see how I might be able to continue without attending lectures or tutorials at all. I managed to complete 1 subject last year, had a really understanding lecturer, and got an 85 for the subject.

While I was waiting for EAD to contact me back, I looked through the courses and saw a couple of lecturers I know and like, a couple of courses i thought could be fun and engaging enough to do from home. They aren’t offered online, but this Uni is so focused on student-to-lecturer negotiation that I thought: ‘well, why don’t I just write them an email?’

So I did. I explained my circumstances, pointed out my good grades, made suggestions that i could make up for class participation components by engaging in the online discussions, and asked them to consider accommodating me.

They both just wrote back and said YES!

I don’t think I’ve felt this happy since my wedding last year. I’m so full of joy I want to scream to everyone that there are good, awesome, intelligent, wonderful academics in the world that will cut you a break and do the right thing and *JUST DIES*

I’ve never, ever, finished anything academic in my life. IN MY LIFE. I dropped out of high school in year 11 (junior year). I’ve failed course after course at TAFE (technical college). I’ve had to defer my university studies over and over.

AND NOW I MAY GRADUATE THIS YEAR.

This is such great news. I love how proactive (and honest) you were with those lecturers, especially how you offered suggestions of how you could make up for participation. Kudos!!! All the best.

Thanks so much for everyone's support! I'm all enrolled and it's going well. So much easier not to have to go in to class!
