Hi!

I am a doctoral candidate in psychology calling your attention to a study I am conducting on post traumatic growth. The purpose of this study is to better understand how psychological factors and coping styles influence personal changes that may occur following a traumatic life event.

You are invited to participate in this study if you are at least 18 years of age, have experienced a traumatic life event (combat, bereavement, life-threatening illness, accident, natural disaster, sexual assault, physical assault, mugging, stalking, etc.) in the past three years, are willing to draw on your experience to answer questions related to the event, and are comfortable responding to religious and/or spiritual coping items.

Being reminded of the positive changes that may have occurred in your life as a result of experiencing a traumatic life event is a potential benefit of participating. Your responses to the study’s questions will be anonymous. No identifiers will be used to determine who does and who does not participate. The only identifying information may be your e-mail address if you decide to e-mail me, the researcher, about the study’s results.

The survey should take about 30 minutes.

Thank you so much for your consideration.

P.S. I am having a really hard time posting my link. I read that another researcher was attempting to get around that by having people reply to the thread. I will see if this strategy works...

The purpose of this study is : helping you to get your doctorate.

Dont you think it is time to do some real scientific research?

I think it sounds like a good idea, personally. Yeah, he's trying to get his doctorate, but there isn't anything wrong with using the Internet to extend your sampling size for survey research. In fact, it's actually better to have more people involved.

I would be happy to participate if you can get it working. :-) best of luck

My trauma happened 6 years ago and further back. So maybe I am not right for the survey. However, just a year ago the PTSD started... so just thought I would ask. Also I am interested but a little anxious and wary about the religious/spiritual coping items you mention, as that usually ends up triggering me...

Thank you for dedicating your doctoral research to further the knowledge of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and it's inevitable aftermath.

My trauma occurred 4 years ago so unfortunately I can't participate but I just wanted to take the time to thank you and wish you success.

Most of my traumas are older. 5 plus years. However, I was stalked by my father 1 year and 5 months ago. While that is not the worst of my traumas by far, it was still life changing, as I no longer talk to my father.

The only part I am uncomfortable with is this part:

are comfortable responding to religious and/or spiritual coping items.

You would have to explain what you mean by all this.

Thank you.

One of the instruments in my survey assesses the use of religious/spiritual coping methods to help alleviate the stress experienced from a traumatic life event (prayer, reading of sacred texts, appreciating nature, building relationships with others, etc.) It is a Likert-based measure: you choose a number that matches with the frequency of engaging in these behaviors.

Stephen, if you are to write this study. It would help in the long term if you included the presence of spiritual/religious doctrines within abusive situations.

There are many here who find solace in spirituality. And a similar number whom have experienced abuse from people who use spiritual beliefs as excuse or even reason to abuse others.

There is rarely a coping style that fits all like a cure-all pill. So there is perhaps more merit in a study that accepts that no study will have definitive answers.
