Power Failures

Adding to all the usual troubles that power failures bring into our lives, (especially in winter) I have a fish tank to worry about also. When the power comes back on, the pump has already emptied itself out from its own momentum. So, if I don't catch it pronto(!) it is toast. The motor burns out.

So, last night at something like 3AM the power went out for a minute. I have a stereo system that resets iself when the power goes back on, so I was awakened by it doing so. PANIC ATTACK, rushing to the fish tank to unplug it so the filter won't burn out.

Then I went to the kitchen to eat something to calm myself down. That being accomplished, I went to see if the pump could be restored. Thankfully, since the power was only on again for less than a minute, it had not blown itself out and died, it was still alive! So I reprimed it and finally got it going again.

However, sleeping after having gone through all this was rather difficult if not impossible. I drifted off for a bit maybe, but my psyche would not rest, fearing another failure and pump burnout this time. By 4-4:30 AM I knew sleeping again would be a useless attempt, so I got up.

I love my fish, but this is rediculous! 2 of them are surface breathers and so they would have survived, but another 6 of them would not have.

My fish tank serves another purpose too, it creates a tiny fountain or waterfall with its pump. I enjoy the benifits healthwise of having a miniature waterfalls in my home. So I really do not want to be without my fish tank or its little waterfalls. But I HATE losing sleep over this. Thank God the stereo woke me is all I can say.

So what, if anything, does a power failure mean to you and your life? How would it disrupt your life?? Do they bring on Panic Attacks in you?

I used to be on oxygen 24/7 and when we had a power failure, I had to be sure I always had a tank in the house. When it was out for longer than a few hours, I'd have to call the company and have them bring out extra tanks. I hated that. Plus, it was expensive.

Following the major flood we had we were without power for four months. Now I find that power outages bring a heightened anxiety to my entire house. I think the kids and I all associate it with inpending disaster.
