DID is a pretty serious diagnosis, so my advice would be to tread lightly there (not that I am implying you are diagnosing her, I realize you are not). But acting erratically and seeming to have personality shifts is something that is not limited to PTSD or DID - it's also a symptom of Borderline Personality Disorder and Bipolar Disorder. And people can go through that while grieving as well. So, it really could be a number of things; I would be skeptical of saying she actually has several different distinct alternate personalities, in the medical sense of the term, though she probably is experiencing some degree of dissociation.

A forum comment from Link Removed seemed to be quite useful to know about and seems to be lining up quite a bit to what is happening with this alternate personality episode thingy.

...Whether you know it or not, if he's left and he has PTSD, then I will bet 95% that he is seeing other women already. You may not want to hear that, but I know PTSD inside out. He needs companionship and can't handle anything beyond it...

If he's drinking or doing drugs, he will lie to everyone and tell them what they want to hear, then continue on doing what he is doing. That is PTSD...

In respect to a 'child self' or what might seem like a 'child alter' but isnt; i have an "inner child" that varies in age from 6 to 12 (where i am a lot, but not all, emotionally as well) and this "inner child" comes out (at different ages it seems) on its own automatically throughout the day.

This makes it seem, at times that i have alternate personalities but dont. Im just haulted, emotionally, at certian ages but not all of my emotions are haulted.

I never loose memory, they dont "take over" and they dont have completely different say likes and dislikes as one would see in DID with alters.

Again, I have not just PTSD but BPD & GAD & possible but not dignosed Attachment Disorder.

I'll throw histrionic in there too for the seductive stuff.

Maybe but I have this thing in my brain saying "I must seduce everyone" and dont have Histrionic.

Best thing would be to have her see a therapist (sorry if i missed if she already has one).

Mr Smith,
That is one person's jaded view. It is totally unrepresentative, and factually incorrect.

Certainly some people do self medicate and are promiscuous, PTSD or no PTSD.
Others don't and aren't.
And there are all shades and variations in between those.

I don't mean this in a nasty way. I'd strongly recommend that you read the articles on CBT and cognitive distortions. You seem to have been very receptive to the extreme and judgemental assessment in the comment that you quoted from.

@mr_smith_v2 PTSD can last a lifetime, or it can be helped in months...per my PTSD sourcebook so to ask how long will PTSD last for someone depends on the trauma and the treatment and how active they are in the treatment. Speaking of the link you provided anyway.

Also, in the upmost reapect to Anthony (man respect for ya):

"If he's drinking or doing drugs, he will lie to everyone and tell them what they want to hear, then continue on doing what he is doing. That is PTSD.."

I dont exactly call that PTSD, I just call that being an addict...coming from one that knows and has known many w/o PTSD.

I dont get where that quote had anything in it to do w/ alters though...going back on topic.

I was not asking how long PTSD can last. I was asking how long a PTSD episode that has the altered personality can last.

The quote had a lot to do with alters because during the PTSD episodes, she changes personality completely quite often and they usually burn out after she takes a sleep for the night or a nap. However other times, it has lasted weeks.
