PTSD, Fear, and Paranoia Over the 'Swine Flu'

I've posted my story in another forum, where other people are freaking too, so... I just wanted to share my experience in hopes that it will show people that fretting and worrying and gossiping about the current flu strain "swine flu" is pointless. I see and hear people everywhere obsessing over the Swine Flu and 24/7 news feeds pushing that hysteria...

It is important to understand what a flu virus actually is - you do NOT get it from eating pig/horse/dog/humans - you get it from airborne contact or close contact with infected individuals (including humans and pigs, in this case). So, if you breathe in air that is carrying the flu, you may become infected - that's why you see people wearing masks.

I caught a deadly flu virus while living on a fly-in only rez way up north in a community of 300 people. You can't get more isolated than that. The nurse practitioner (there are no doctors up there) misdiagnosed it as bronchitis and gave me standard penicillin. The day before I flew off the rez, I was bed ridden with chills, sweats, fever, body ache, a cough.

Still, we continued to believe it was bronchitis. When I got back to the city, they mistreated it without taking x-rays (by then, the flu virus had turned into pneumonia). A couple days later I was coughing up blood and my regular doc was fortunately on staff. It took a month of staying in bed and different treatments to recover. Had I stayed on the rez, I wouldn't be around right now - and that's life.

There are questions about whether you can counter this new strain with a flu shot. It is up to you whether you get any shots, just like some vaccinations for other infections. For me, I've only got the flu shot once - and it was in the days leading up to my battle with a deadly flu virus. The city docs later told me I'd have to get the flu shot every year - but that year was my first and last. My choice, my risk.

I've already had a deadly flu virus once and escaped. Am I worried or watching the news headlines 24/7? No. Why? Because it is an airborne infection I can't see and or control. If I get this 'swine flu' or not, I can't control it, so worrying or living in fear is pointless.

It's like watching an inner city crumble - it happens around the world (your decaying city isn't unique), so instead of living in fear for your vulnerable body and fearing, do the best you can with what you have (even if it is infected lungs or broken asphalt). Live in the moment and accept that you have no control.

oh gosh was i suppose to be freaking about the flu...i just thought......winter= flu season.....

im freaking about the cold weather........tho.......i so need to live up darwin now.......and its only autum..and its only jack frost .........(i hear all you snow living folk yes ima sook to the cold....)....lol......anyway....morning everyone......

Earlier today, I posted in a members diary, that there is no sense in getting upset over something that we basically have no control over. Just use common sense here. Do what the health officials are asking us to do.

Wash your hands often, stay home if you are sick, don't travel to Mexico, yada, yada, yada....

Getting upset only exacerbates your anxiety.

They announced on the TV last night that the swine flu is transferred by human to human contact, not from pigs. (Swine flu is badly misnamed!)

Also it hasn't killed anyone outside of Mexico, which could be partially due to their medical system? From what I've heard if you catch it right away, no problems. Just like every other flu.

I'm not sweating it!

I've got a friend in real life who is absolutely worried about it and normally, she's not upset over sensationalized media coverage. Got another one who frets and assumes she's already going to die if you cough near her.

Bec, I think too, that Mexico probably has subpar medical coverage? I know if I had stayed on the rez I would have died - but in the city, they can give you all kinds of intervention.

The *swine flu* is a combination of 3 different flu viruses. Swine flu, bird flu and human flu. What I can't for the life of me get, is just HOW did all 3 of these combine into one???????

Yes, this has been reported, on the news, so I am not talking out of my ass. They have also reported, but not confirmed that possibly 2 people in Ca may have died from this flu. More testing needed to confirm.

There are also nasty rumors, already on the web, that the governments caused this to cut down on population explosions........OK then....NEXT!!!!!!

Yeah I think the media thinks their job is to attempt to have everyone as freaked out as possible. Blah!

Glad you didn't croak! I would miss out on laughing my butt off at the pig's breath comment! ;)

bec

Wendy: I heard that on the news too, about the 3 different strains. I just didn't feel like trying to explain that one! LOL

Is it that the flu is a combination of several strains?

What really bothers me is that guys like Anderson Cooper are over-reporting on the issue. Why?

Bec, thanks for the props! I honestly did think you could get it from pig's breath! I haven't talked to a pig lately, but you never know when you'll run into a pig hanging out at your local cafe, eh!

I have tried talking out of my ass before, but I always forget to do my butt flap up after! Yeeesh.

It stops them from talking about the recession. That's a good thing!

Choose your poison, over here its bird flu, swine flu, mad cow, global warming, being blown up by an extremist of one sort or another or the worst recession since WW2 or obesity....oh yeah and the bees are dying everywhere so there wont be any food (come to think of it that could help the obesity problem). AND watch out because every person aged between 13 and 25 ish wearing a hodded top is carrying a knife.

So.... as the weather man says "Dont go out unless you have to"

Ok, so while we can all make jokes about the media causing fear, and warning that the sky is falling....There has been 1 confirmed death in Texas. A 23 month old baby has died.

This isn't cause for panic, but it does have meaning that this is a serious flu, that can and will cause deaths.

What about the 150+ that have died in Mexico?

All I'm saying is the press are hyping it up and its very hard to know what to believe when they cry wolf all the time.
