Do you think they should teach people about PTSD (maybe in school). What should they educate them about?
I think it would be useful to educate people about some very common triggers such as fireworks or standing behind a persons back. People then could make a more informed choice if the really want to light fireworks or could give other people a bit more space if they stand behind them? How do you think? Or do you think this is snowflake like thinking?

I think more general mental health awareness in schools would be a good thing, but I'm not sure about making that ptsd specific. Especially with regard to 'common' triggers - for the same reason as trigger warnings aren't all that helpful.

There are some "mandatory" classes that could be made as electives in trade for a mandatory health class. This would include basic nutrition, sex ed, common health concerns as well as a few weeks spent of mental health awareness and stress reduction techniques. I don't know why schools don't do this.

I've noticed in my half-century's worth of existence that not many things are taught within the walls of schools that can actually or healthily sustain a life, but much is taught to help supposedly sustain the economy. I've also noticed, as a result of doing a major script flip in my own life, that many higher institutions of learning are highly, if not strictly, funded by many of the same industries that serve up some of the most toxic things. Gee, it seems as if it may have been designed that way? It breaks my heart.

It has definitely been set up that way. There is a youtube video called Don't Stay In School. My husband is a teacher and he 100% agrees with this kid. I get earfuls from my husband all the time saying exactly what you are. Schools are not set up for student success in life. The are set up to help kids be better consumers.

I spent over 13 years working in a residential vocational rehab facility as a life skills instructor, dorm counselor, group facilitator, recreation assistant, and community volunteer advocate. We would occasionally visit local schools to promote disability awareness, however, it was limited to having kids try to function doing daily tasks while mimicking physical disabilities.

They would sometimes include an exercise for trying to read with dyslexia or another learning disability, depending on the age group, but never included anything else with any more depth. Even the staff directly working the various diagnoses weren't well-versed in how to simply communicate with the people struggling, much less helpfully, or healthily, treat them.

Then I began to speak up and attempt to address unethical issues taking place. We all know how that works out. Needless to say, once I began wrestling more openly with my own struggles, I quickly learned how their main concerns do not lie within the individuals well-being, from any angle. I refer to myself as also being a recovering state employee as a result of those hellish experiences.
