Here`s one my old man used to sing a lot. Kinda sums up the beliefs in all of us while serving, even if the song is a bit dated and out of touch with the present stand of things

The Memorial at 2:21 says
Greater love hath no man than this,
That a man lay down his life for his friends

makes me think of all the old and bold Vets who kept their memories locked up sometimes for decades. I think back to how my Grandad was the strong silent type, with a temper, who loved his drink, never spoke ill of the dead, and always spoke of respect for his enemies. He was also the most stubborn and independant individual I knew, and the only person who could break him in an instant was his long suffering wife. When he met my first proper girlfriend he told us "the first 2 years of my marriage, I never saw my wife due to the war, those times were very hard to live through, but those were also the happiest 2 years of my life" and now I get what he was on about. He would have been proud to have seen me march through Glasgow with the Jocks just as he did, and his father did!

Spot on James. And the vid. My Dad died (young) before I did all my stuff, but, given all he did and went through, I think he would have approved. It's a bastard that the circumstances that hurt our women are the bit we are fond of.

Its all funny upfront until we lose someone. You guys were not to know but a pal of mine in the late 80's dropped a frag into his ammo pouch, the pin came out. It was before the F1 with the new safety clip. He lived for a while. Now they have individual pouches for each one. Bad luck if your in combat and need them real fast.

On the other side, we used to post them just on top of the bunker wall during training to see how much dirt we could raise. Hell of a laugh. Some of the grunts I trained with were psycho mother f*ckers.

We have a f*cked sense of reality hey.

Damn sorry about your friend Jimmy. Those kind of losses are hardest because they could have been avoided. Then you spend a long time thinking of anything you could have done to prevent it.

That kind of humor did get us through some rough patches though. I had an Aussie friend who was with us at a bombing scene. I mean there was carnage every where. We were all very quiet, in awe of the spectacle before us. Then, over the squad radio he whispers "I see dead people." I think we all just came unglued. Guys like that have my unending respect.
