Hi everyone,

My name is Kerry. My daughters and I all suffer from PTSD from years of living in an extremely volatile and abusive relationship with their father. We have been receiving treatment and are all working on healing but sometimes it just gets to be overwhelming for me. I am looking for other parents who have children with PTSD.

There are lots of articles/websites etc, out there about adults with PTSD from their childhoods but not much in the way of information for parents who are actually trying to help them now.. before they become adults. The girls are 8, 10 and 10 (twins).

I look forward to meeting you all and learning.

Smiles,
Kerry

Welcome Kerry.

I think you need two hats - Supporter and Sufferer. I think learning how to support your children will help you in your management of yourself. Well, lets hope so anyway.

Good luck!

Thanks Nicolette,
I received a warning about one of my posts and I've read the rules twice and I can't figure out what I did wrong. It was the post that I answered you on which hat (supporter or sufferer) I wanted. I would love to be a vital part of this community but I really would like to know what rules I'm breaking. I was often told I was "wrong" without being told "why" and it is very concerning to me to have this happen to me here.

I am not trying to "challenge authority" or to "make trouble" I really just want to know what rule I broke (specifically) so that I do not break it again. If it's just nebulous I can't make sure I'm following it. I came here to connect... is that not allowed?

Thanks so much for your time,
Kerry

Hi Kerry,

Welcome to the Forum. I am going to break this response into two sections, and the first one is just to welcome you.

I am a PTSD sufferer and I also have three daughters. All three suffer from the abuse we all suffered from my ex-husband. All three suffer from anxiety and depression, but because they are all over the age of 18 it has been really hard to get them to commit to counseling. They all cope in different ways, but mainly trying to "live normally". Only, there is nothing really "normal" about the extremes they suffer. So as a mom, the more counseling you are able to provide your children the better off they will be in the long run. But I completely understand how hard it is to deal with your own symptoms and those of your children. Just love them and be there for them. Love, patience and guidance can go a long way in helping.

The second part of this is as a moderator. The warning you received was just to remind you to go back and read the rules and guides for posting. Because of the size of this forum and the nature of PTSD, there are rules for posting in the correct place, using paragraphs and complete sentences, and others to create organization and ease of reading. Please use the "Help Desk" as questions are responded to quickly, and it gives an opportunity to provide an answer in a forum where others go to seek information; and may answer another persons question too.

I hope you do find the support here you are seeking. That is one of the best things about this forum, as it is truly a place where people understand.

Take care.
Debbie

Hi Kerry,

Welcome to the forum. My H has PTSD and I am pretty certain (although this has not been officially diagnosed) that my oldest s-daughter (29) does too and middle s-daughter (25) certainly suffers from the after effects of childhood trauma. We have a five year old as well. So I guess we have you all "book-ended".

Read around, everything, old, new and especially the stuff at the top of the forums. This is a great place.

Wishing you and your girls peace and healing.
