Question About Benefits-combat Ptsd Mixed With Prior Trauma

I’m looking for advice from anyone who might be knowledgeable about the limits of VA benefits. I have a loved one who is in need of counseling and willing to go, but apprehensive because of a fear that I’m not sure is necessary.

The story is below, but in short, my question is this: If he is diagnosed by the VA with combat PTSD, receiving disability and counseling, what impact would it have to disclose trauma which occurred in his life prior to service? Would the VA, in discovering this trauma, pull the plug on his benefits?

The story is this: He was sexually abused as a child and, naturally, suffers emotionally from that. Additionally, he grew up in an atmosphere of various other types of abuses and very little healthy structure to enable him to cope.

Then, he joined the military. He threw himself into his service and placed great value on becoming a “good soldier”. He was a dedicated soldier, but in combat, made a mistake which landed him in trouble. Therefore, while in combat, he went through a terrible series of disciplinary action, arrested, went through a court martial hearing (which I think he won), and generally ostracized and mistreated by his chain of command. Of course, he also experienced the normal hardships of combat, including killing a man who may/may not have been a combatant (the uncertainty of that experience haunts him, but he was carrying out orders when he did it).

He came home and got out of the military about seven years ago. He’s tried working, but panic attacks interfered with his ability to work. He is practically homeless. One of his fellow vets guided him through the VA process in pursuit of benefits. He was interested in counseling as well as receiving disability pay to sustain him financially. After going through the gauntlet of paperwork, meetings, counseling and WAITING, he victoriously began receiving disability pay this month. While going through the VA process, he did not disclose his prior abuse and trauma for fear that they would declare that he had PTSD prior to the military and be disqualified.

Now that he is on track financially, he is hoping to begin the emotional journey through counseling and therapy. However, he is afraid to go because either a) he will not disclose all of the events contributing to his present condition, crippling the healing process, or b) he is also worried that he WILL disclose these events and lose the financial benefits he relies on.

I’m certain that he is not the only case like this. My hope is that the VA recognizes that, while he was not a picture of emotional health before he joined, his experiences during combat directly contributed to his current disability, and therefore, be willing to continue providing disability pay as well as counseling to work through all of his issues.

Any similar experiences or knowledge about the system? Thanks so much.

Liz unless you are a combat vet yourself you will probably get kicked off here... but he needs to go to a veterans service org like the American Legion or the DAV or VFW... they have his back.. we all have our prior service history... it is what we did when in that matters... but ya... the best I can do for you is give that bit of advice... he needs a service org to go to... good luck to you both...

Good call, thanks! I've got some buddies in the AL who might know. Good to have an azmyth :)

I hope I don't get kicked off. That would be wrong. I am a SM and a vet. My deployment happened to not be classified as "combat" when I was there, but what difference does that make in a community here to lend assistance to vets and those who support them? I became friends with my loved one while we were both in, we were deployed on different missions, even had romance (over now due to the withdrawal factor). This community has been a great rescource for me in trying to understand the things he's going through and cope while I waited in silence.

Anyway, thanks for the support and to those who share their experience. This place is a great tool to empower us against a most elusive enemy.

Liz, this resorce would remain a good source of info for you too. You see most sections are open for none members to view at will. But logging in and posting infers that you have read the rules and qualify to participate. If you are not a combat veteran with PTSD then you don't qualify.

These rules are meant to allow members to converse with other Combat Vets without the out side influences of non vets interfering with our conversations. There is another site called PTSD Forum, where supporters are free to join and converse about their issues. And if you truely need advice that only a vet could give, there arer people there that have your 6.

But continueing to post on this site may interfere with the healing process of the members here. I know when I first started out on here, the appearance of non-vets would make me almost panic. I felt like my last "safe place" was gone. This is the internet, and there truely are no reral "safe places", but we try to keep this one as as safe as possible. And that means no outsiders.

So please feel free to view the public areas as a non member, and limit your queries and posts to the PTSD Forum site. It would help many on here I assure you.

Ya we wish you no ill... this is somewhere we can say what we really need to say is all... the stuff we can't tell other people...

Hey Liz

I'm sure that there are numerous vets with PTSD that have had prior traumas. In fact there is some schools of thought that those with prior traumas may be at a bigger risk for PTSD than those that haven't had that. Either way he should still apply to the VA for a claim and as a vet with PTSD he'll get the needed counceling that he requires. I would suggest though that he only address his problems as they relate to PTSD with the VA and not his prior problems. It's not about non-disclosure but more focusing on what the VA will be most attentive to. Any counceling that he might receive will eventually touch on any prior problems as well.

I wish you both the best and a lot of luck with his claim. You should also check out the sister site to this one as there are many people like you that have loved ones with the problems that you've described and you may find it very helpful.

Oops, sorry, didn't mean to intrude. Clearly, there is a great deal I don't understand about the community. Please feel free to delete the thread as I would hate to affect someone that way.

I really did think this one fell in the gap between the two sites. I could be missing something (again), but the sister site does not seem to be geared toward combat PTSD, particulary regarding the VA. My only exposure to PTSD is combat vets, including this individual as well as (far too many of) my colegues and subordinates.

At the end of the day, I agree that it's more important that the members here have a sanctuary from the public. And I am grateful that, as a silent observer, I can learn tools to be a positive part of their lives, as well as refer them here with full confidence that it is a place they can trust.

Thanks again and sorry 'bout that.

Oh dont worry Liz... Everyone joins this site thinking they are the exception to every rule. Why should we mind? Maybe after reading the rules you should have helped your friend by asking him to join? I know I know...your above it all. This crap really rattles my cage.
What these people do is no different than running into your home and sitting down at the table for dinner and they eat your plate of food. All while you stand there and watch. I am sorry but im not as nice as these other guys. Gimme back my chow, get out of my chair and dont stop running till your off the porch!
