Another thing to look into might be focusing.

Focus therapists tend to be very process oriented, letting the person go at their own pace, encouraging the person to find and form truths of their lives and bodies and healing on their own.

Welcome to the forum.

I'm glad you're open to therapy.

I think that professional treatment is a must when we get to a point where our symptoms are severe to the level of our freedom possibly being compromised.

weren't trying to intentionally hurt me.

Exactly. Different things work for different people & there's no way on earth for any of us to know if what works best for us, individually, works worst for someone else. Whole helluva lot of different perspectives & backgrounds on the forums, which is one of its strengths. Let's you take what you like & discard the rest; also reframes the exact same concept phrased in different ways, so people who can't hear a thing one way, can hear it a different way. Like learning control of yourself ...&... becoming in tune with and actualizing your own potential to its most dynamic & generative form... and are actually the exact same thing. Shrug. Just phrased differently. Which way makes sense, creates the "Oh! That. I want / I can do that. " depends on the individual. Like learning styles with kids. Finding the way(s) that work best -for that individual kid- is foundational in being able to light the match, creating wonder & awe & excitement / the passion and drive to learn more, rather than fill the pail.

It sounds like Rogerian therapy, also known as client centred therapy might be helpful in that therapis...
Very much agreed... The Humanistic approach (Rogers is one of the big names there) is probably where you'd get the most traction. While all schools of thought in psych borrow pieces from each other, each has a very distinct "flavor", as well as the unifying differences that set it apart from every other school of thought & practice in psychology. There are brilliant & terrible & mediocre practitioners in every school of thought... So be open to finding a shazaaaam! individual in a school you don't generally like, as well as duds in schools you do like... But in searching for the right people? Knowing where to look is usually pretty helpful.

The link it won't let me share explains a lot of how I feel. In my whole life, I've only ever had one therapist who didn't engage in behavior that I would consider "gaslighting," if it is defined the way the article describes. The only one who seemed outwardly to respect my feelings put me on a dangerous medication that made me suicidal, in a botched attempt to medically numb them away. I am very sensitive to the type of attack this article is calling "gaslighting," perhaps because I place a lot of value on feelings, or perhaps because it played a huge role in both of my major traumatic experiences, as part of the abuse in one, and as the counterproductive and abuse-enabling reaction of those with the power to stop it in another.

If you look up the article by Everyday Feminism about "Seven 'positive thinking' phrases that can actually cross the line into gaslighting," this will make more sense.

Welcome to the forums  I hope this place helps you. It's very useful because of the bulk amount of people who feel similar and understand. There is a lot of advice and support to be found here :) I hope that this amazing community helps you as much as it helped me, reading all the similar stories, and learning a lot along the way. Hugs if you accept
