Reported My Therapist

Thank you so much Lewa. I added an update the other day as the process continues. It's an odd process for a number of reasons but I feel that I have been able to separate the initiation of the complaint from the eventual outcome.

It would be especially healing if there were some type of sanctions placed on her on her but if that doesn't happen so be it. I believe I have already achieved a resolution by forcing her to address what she did in a public forum.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I appreciate very much.

I know things are different in Canada, but I'm in a senior seminar course at my university: Ethics in Psychology. We've been discussing a lot of different ethical concerns, and are on the counseling unit. Judging from what I've learned in that class, she will most likely get a strong letter of reprimand, or a censure, or expulsion (in which case, her license to practice might be revoked too). It depends on the evidence, her testimony, and whatever information you gave them. But I would bet that she will definitely get a strongly worded letter of reprimand. Though I fully expect her to get the more increased punishments.

Update:
From last April, 2015 until November 2015 I heard nothing from her licensing body. Finally I called and they told me that they had sent my case out to assess for 'prosecutorial viability'. They said I would be hearing back soon. They explained that prosecutorial viability was assessed to basically see if they thought the complaint had either enough merit, proof/evidence or maybe both.

Months passed and I didn't hear anything. I was able to get a lawyer who offered to make some phone calls to them on my behalf and she called and got the same response. I was to have received a reply from the therapist to my 'complaint' which the college was supposed to forward on but I had received nothing.

Monday was a holiday here and on Tuesday I received an email and a voice message from the College wanting to 'touch base'. I had a feeling that they were going to tell me that they couldn't find 'prosecutorial viability' in my case since most of my witnesses are either dead or they were also regulated professionals who knew what was going on but to admit that at this point would have put them in professional jeopardy. I assumed they were going to drop my case. And I truly prepared myself for that. I took a few days to call them back.

Today I had a moment and I called them from work. They told me they were going to be proceeding to a disciplinary hearing which means they either found prosecutorial viability or the complaint is so heinous that they need to cover their bases and make sure they aren't accused later of not having handled it thoroughly.

I was so prepared for them to tell me they were dropping it so it really took about 20 minutes for it to sink in that we were moving ahead now. After all this time.

I believe I have received what I needed from this. She will have to go before a discipline committee now and speak/defend. She knows what she did, what happened, the witnesses know and whether they choose to come forward or not is not my worry now. She will know that she didn't get away with it ...because finally, after all this time, I told.

I want to thank you all for your support and all your replies to my posts. Your support has been more than I could have hoped for. I am deeply grateful.

Good to go! Reporting her was a huge step and the right one. She hurt you and was highly unprofessional and unethical.

You were a teenager when this started. You legally couldn't give consent. She was in a position of trust and authority. You were trying to survive.

No matter what the outcome, you spoke out. That is huge!
