Hi,

I'm just looking for some advice. I dropped out of school rather spectacularly a couple of years ago. I have a job and as it goes its ok, but its not what I want to do for the rest of my life. Have any of you managed to go back into education successfully? Did you study from home or enrol at a college/university? Did you get any support?

There is a good university not far from my home that I could apply to, it asks on the form about mental health and if you do have problems asked what they can do to help.

Just looking for some advice, success (or not) stories and if I do manage to get the nerve to go ahead some support.

Hi Lyrical

Welcome to a great place of help and understanding.

There are a few members on here who have gone back into education, can't remember who they are right now. I think some have taken online courses and some have gone back to university and school.

Good for thinking about going back. Why not send in the form, then give them a call and speak to someone, if you can. I am sure they will accommodate you if you explain any areas you have issues with.

Good luck and go for it.

Hi Amethist,

Thankyou for your post. It's good to hear that other people have gone back into education. Your suggestion of speaking to someone is probably a good idea, there is an email address for the disability section but I wasn't sure if the PTSD would come under that or not? I don't want to just email student services as I know most of the people there are students who are also employed by the university and I feel wary about leaving myself exposed like that.

I'm attempting to put together a personal statement, and am toying with mentioning it breifly in there as that was why I dropped out of school originally which they are bound to want to know about.

Once again thanksyou for your response.

Good idea about the e-mail Lyrical, maybe they have a section on the university web site. You could get a better idea from that, to see what is included.

Just a thought.

Thanks Amethist,

I'm off to have another mosey through the website.

Thanksyou x

Eta: they have a mental health and well-being advisor, I think i'll drop them an email and test the waters.

Hi Lyrical:hello:

Good for you!!! I've recently been back to college to study to teach adults. My threads are in the success section- one is" facing my fears getting back to teaching" and the other was posted last week I think titled" I completed my course".

I had serious doubts about being able to process information, I'd lost confidence etc. I spoke to staff running the course at enrolment interview and was upfront. They said I would be supported but felt I would be fine and although I found it a challenge I excelled and grew as a result.

Let us know how you do and if I can help any further.

Education Addict--I Think

Hi Lyrical,

First off, love the name. There are a few of us who are doing the school thing. I made it through college and a graduate degree. My undergraduate degree was done from age 19 to 23. Basically crashed and burned for a while in my sophomore (2nd) year but rallied. Was in school full time and worked 30 hours a week in a convienience store. After the first "breakdownl," I cut back on on class hours and took a max of 4 classes at a time and looked for less taxing employment (10 to 15 hours a week). Better that way. This was all traditional, on campus classes (coursework).

Went for my masters in rehabilitation counseling right after--did one traditional semester but dropped out for personal reasons. Wanted to be with my mother whose health was failing--not PTSD related. Good choice--she died that year and I spent that time really bonding with her. Started a fulltime 40 hrs + a week job and a few years later, started back part time (one or two classes a semester) school to finish the masters. I had to commute to be in class one to 3 hours depending on where the class was held.Did that for a couple of years. Crashed and burned again and slowed the pace down and finished in '87.

I am back in school again now on-line and working toward a second masters only because I am hoping to teach some college classes part time when I retire and right now my work is paying for tuition so it's hard not to take advantage of some free tuition when the degree is required to do what I want to do.

I feel the on line is much easier because I am still working fulltime 40 hrs a week plus commuting time. About 11 hrs a day getting there and back plus work day. I think there is more flexibility on line. I take one class a quarter (which is ten weeks long) and I find the pace manageable. I take three to four classes a year. I requested "reasonable accomodations" through the school's disability services department and they work with me.

I went through a very hard time last two years, very depressed and PTSD symptoms being hard to manage. The difficulty was more related to a bad experince in therapy so I can't say work or school was the prime contributor to this last bout of depression, etc..

My thoughts would be on-line if you can get what you want and you can work independently and don't need the face-to-face feed back.

Hope that helps. Good luck in your decision. The tassle is always worth the hassle as they say.:thumbs-up If you want to ask me any questions you are welcome to send me a private message. I think if you click my name above it will link you to the right page for that.

Thanks guys,

I emailed the contact according to the website just after I posted on here 2 days ago and have heard nothing back. They're probably away for the holiday season but it doesn't help build confidence.

I really want to study English with a Creative Writing option, i'm a little concerned about money as I work 45 hour weeks at the moment, I pay the bills for me and my family (mother and brother) so can't afford to drop to much. Online might be a good option for me but i'm not sure where to start.

Will Pm you GDF.

Thanks all x

Keep me posted..I am considering returning in sep. I graduated nursing in 1994..so it would be 16 years. I am not sure what to do, the on line sounds interesting too.
