Rude People

Sounds like you're the rude person in this situation. A stranger is under no obligation to offer help if you're not in a clearly life threatening situation. Perhaps he thought it would have been rude to offer to help when you were already handling the stairs by yourself, or your struggle wasn't as evident from someone else's perspective as it was from yours. Now had you asked for help and he had made a rude comment that would be one thing, but instead you just started conflict with a stranger with an aggressive comment and then stormed off. That's rude.

I constantly dind myself doing little things for strangers that to completely unacknowledged: easing back to let someone merge, holding open doors, stepping off the path to let them pass...

When they pass without a hint of "thanks", I put on my biggest smile & my politest, super-friendly voice & call out after them, "You're welcome".

The inconsiderate has been noted, but I will not stoop to their level. Makes me happy:)

this man who was stood smoking his cigarette was watching me, only about 5 metres in front of the door, and he could clearly see I was struggling. It took me about a minute to try and get down these two steps, and the guy sort of started sniggering at me.

So I guess by your logic, they should not have left the house. Lest they be of perfect health?

Or else every jackass that comes along may audibly laugh with impunity. Hope you never have a disability. If you have any notion in your head that most people are kind and good. Haha. Nope. You're in for a hard lesson.
