Hello, all.
I have a neighbor and a friend whos going through what I can only imagine is an internal hell.
He was in a special ops unit, un-named, and went into deep enemy territory.
He told me of some of his experiences, killing men with his hands, laser targetting a house with a weapons factory in the basement.. and watching a mother throw her child out the window right before the aircraft reached to destroy the building.
Hes a good man. A kind one. Intelligent, funny, one of the best divers in my country, almost finished his marine biology degree. Whatever one may think of what his actions caused, every death left a permanent scar, and now he sits.. drunk whenever he can be.. crying of how hes a monster, he shouldnt be alive.
To add to that, near the end of his service he was seriously injured by an explosion. His back broke in three places, his skull cracked open, he was in a coma for three days.
Most troubling of all.. people who served directly with him in his unit have started commiting suicide, one by now. It was a small unit and in only a few years hes already at three lost friends and brothers in arms.
It seems like he things its a vision of the future, his destiny.

Hes been through it all and his friends and family just feel.. helpless.
Ive spent the entire night researching it the best I can, creating a game plan for the near future to normalize his life, visit daily, volunteer to walk his dog so he can get him back from his mother, and .. try to make him laugh.

I feel like this may be far beyond me, I have this intense fear that ill make it worse.. but I also see very few alternatives. He doesnt want help. He doesnt go to groups or therapy. His family doesnt communicate well with him and he just doesnt answer his friends if they come to his door or call him. More then a few times me and others have prodded him through the window just to make sure he was just passed out drunk and didnt die.

Has anyone seen this especially volatile mix and do you have any suggestions?

visit daily, volunteer to walk his dog
This alone will help. You can't fix a veteran, or anyone with PTSD, but you can just be there. Nothing more, nothing less, just be there to chat with them, help them do things, even ask if they want to walk the dog together. Spending time with someone is often the best medicine.

Well done on helping someone.

Seen it, yes. Done it. And if it weren't for the kindness of too many people dragging me along by the scruff of my neck I'd be long gone. You really cannot fix someone. But even just a few minutes of eased pressure with someone else being there is... Unexplainable. Bright points in the darkness.

Update: He does have night terrors apparently.
Bad ones.
Not for a bit, but a few monthes ago he was literally screaming an arabic in his sleep while a friend was visiting from another country
