It was always great to un lace the boots and change into civies, anybody walking around the mall in ACU's is in a f*cken rush lol.

Hell, I still see folks in battle dress sitting up at the bar after work, at lunch. SMH

Only time I wore off base was if I had to stop some where on the way home. i didn't see any reason to wear them as a fashion statement. I'm still angry that BDU/DCU went away. I didn't mind shining boots. It's a good way to see who's a shit bag.

Although it is personally abhorrent to me when people who have never served dress up in a military uniform and medals they have not earned, the gentleman in the news video Spock posted had the audacity to do so less than a month after two Canadian Armed Forces members were killed by domestic terrorists on Canadian soil. Needless to say, the emotional climate in my normally polite country was not one of tolerance or understanding. He has been formally charged with several counts under the criminal code of Canada, received threats and has been suspended from his job - all actions that were not taken against others who were found to have committed the same offence in recent years. He should see some form of punitive action for his choice to take recognition he did not earn.

He was found wearing several medals, including the Medal of Bravery, my country's third highest honour, all of which he had purchased off the internet days before. He purchased the medals, uniform, insignia, and all accoutrements legally. I'll get back to this in a minute.

My first point is this - the debate is raging in the press and soon the courts as to whether or not he has a mental illness that makes him impersonate military personnel. If that is the cases, then he needs help and Lord knows I pay 46% taxes that include a universal health care system so he should be able to get the help he so desperately needs

My last point is as follows: the time, effort and energy spent in prosecuting him will be wasted unless it is not coupled with a law that prohibits the sale of military uniforms and medals. If it is illegal to wear them unless you have earned them, with perhaps exemptions for museums, then why are they a "for sale" item anyway?

Other thoughts or opinions?

I'm with you, on this. You should have to show some kind of proof of service to be able to purchase any of the military uniforms or other accoutrements. Sadly, economics rules the day and anyone can go online and buy anything.

Regardless of whether the impersonator is 'mentally ill' or not he should have to serve a sentence where perhaps he has to help veterans in some way. Perhaps in doing so it may help him to understand what it is that he's done. I still think 20 lashes and a week in the public stocks would be fitting.

Yea when I went back home to El Paso the f*cken guys looked like shit bags at some bar. ACU's hammered. Thought we were going to have to throw down over the girls me and my buddy had, but they decided to back off.

That shit used to always piss me off. Even today I'll be at a pub and see National Guard guys hanging out in their ACU's or flash back BDU's drinking.

Then when I see the officers doing it, that goes right through me. They know better.

I know things change with time but somethings shouldn't. When I was in the Corps, did I actually say that , it was utilities during work time. Or if you were an admin the work uniform of the day. They were never worn off base. Either you wore the 'Uniform of the Day' summer or winter or you wore your 'civies'. There was a pride about wearing the uniform, it was always 'squared away'.

I wouldn't go out to a nice restaurant after having worked in the field when I was a carpenter. I'd 'shit, shower and shave' so that I'd be 'presentable' and my wife would have a nice escort. I know that as time goes on, things continue to change. Some for the better, others not. And I know that ya'll will feel that way about somethings as well. Times change but having pride in yourself and dressing accordingly will never go out of style in my book. Just the opinion of one old dinosaur. :D

At 29Palms the CG put out that you could not wear them off base, unless you were driving to or from you residence. Solved a lot of issues.

I was at my son's Cub Scout Christmas party and talking with some of the other leaders. They were just seeing the videos on youtube with no context about the seriousness of it. I spent the time to educate them on the Stolen Valor Act and that most states will prosecute these individuals for shop lifting if they received something for free or reduced price on these costumes. They are costumes and not uniforms when worn by scum this way. We need to take some time and educate our friends about what the Act says and how it hurts those in true need. The general public is concerned, when they are told to be concerned. I love Sheeple, so easy to persuade.

One of the leaders was talking about being in the JROTC program when he was in high school. Apparently, it is now cool for kids to wear the JROTC uniform when they aren't even in the program. He has caught a few, just like these fools. How times have changed.

It's a real shame but there is a website called Guardians of Valor that informs you on different individuals that have been caught faking and other stuff. Dead Link Removed

I do wish that we could shame as a part of punishment for these guys. Maybe make them wear a big sign that says I wish I was good enough to serve in the military but I'm not so I tried to fake it but got caught.

Once I was delayed at work so I contacted the other coach of our soccer team and let him know I wouldn't be able to coach the game so he would be on his own. He had a family emergency and couldn't be there either but my BGen overheard the phone call and gave me leave to go to the game and return back to the office after because the game would have been forfit without a coach. Another officer in the Command Suite took my duties as well as theirs for a couple of hours so I ended up actually coaching the game in my combats. The kids, other than mine, had never seen me in uniform before so they were really surprised, some of the parents didn't even recognize me.

I thought it was horrible to coach in my uniform but if the team missed that game the kids would automatically be disqualified from the upcoming tournament so I put on my big girl panties and did it. I couldn't imagine being comfortable sitting in a bar off base in my uniform and drinking!!!

There is my long boring story that contributes nothing to the conversation really but kinda states my view on uniforms in public lol
