This topic keeps coming up a lot in my life. I'm not sure where I stand on this issue.

I'm wondering what folks here think.

Is single payer healthcare a good idea? Why or why not?

Have you been in a government run health care system? Do you like it? Do you want to keep it? Does it need reform? Do you want to go back to privatized healthcare? If you are in a country without single payer healthcare, do you want single payer or would you rather keep privatized healthcare? Does that need reform?

WEEELLLL...
I think that single payer is more financially effective, and usually delivers better outcomes.
I think that single-payer for most care...with maybe a little supplemental insurance for boutique and optional service-care? Would probably be ideal.

But we're going to need to raise taxes to pay for it, for one...THAT's going to be a hard sell, even though we'd likely get more value for our money than buying private health insurance...

For two, the health insurance companies are going to fight it tooth and nail.

I was actually wondering if it would be easier to expand Medicare's payouts to doctors/facilities, so that Medicare actually constitutes full coverage...and allow people under 65 to buy into Medicare on a sliding-scale basis?

...You see, Medicare has way less overhead than the 20% the private insureres are allowed?
So it finances care a lot more efficiently.

So ideally, the parasitic health insurance industries would be atrophied slowly.

Math:
Payroll taxes
Federal taxes
State and local taxes
Sales Tax
Health insurance co pay and then life time cap on health care

More than All first world nations in the up front single pay for all universal coverage and cost already paid in taxes. War and prisons cost a LOT of money.

Prisons for non violent offenses cost more than annually than a universal health care system.
