I am able to feel happy half of the time, maybe I exaggerated the negative feelings?

I read an article awhile ago and it was quite interesting. It said the reason for the increased depression rates was that as humans we had started to expect that in order to have a good life we have to be happy all of the time. Apparently it is not true as without the more difficult or sad times there would be no better or happier and we would eventually go through life as a process rather than experiencing feelings. They said the ratio was around 50/50 happy/sad throughout our lives which had the pattern somewhat resembling a roller coaster. I think sometimes we expect that our lives have to be providing us with this great happiness in order for us to fulfill it and it is with those thoughts and unrealistic expectations is how we let ourselves down.I am able to feel happy half of the time, maybe I exaggerated the negative feelings?
