Sleep Pattern Changing

For a long time I was staying awake until very late at night until I'd get so exhausted I had to go to sleep. I was trying to avoid nightmares. I thought if I stayed up late enough and went to sleep totally exhausted if I did have a nightmare I wouldn't remember it when I woke up. I did this for a long time. It didn't always work.

Recently I was up late one night and decided I was exhausted and I should go to sleep. I got ready got in bed and closed my eyes. Usually I fall asleep so fast I have to think hard the next morning to remember laying back and closing my eyes.

On this particular night I just laid there yawning and yawning and tossing and turning. I was so exhausted my body felt heavy. It felt almost painful to be awake.

The next night it was the same thing. And the next night too. The next night I laid in bed for 3 hours totally exhausted and waiting for sleep. The last time I looked at the clock it was 5am.

The thing is I wake up at about the same time every morning no matter what time I fall asleep at night. I wake up around 10:30am. My insomnia is back. I haven't had insomnia since I was married. I think it was about 20 years ago when my insomnia was this bad.

I'm tired all day everyday. I fight taking naps all day so I can sleep at night. And then I can't sleep at night. I already know I can't take medicine to help me sleep.

I'm thinking this could be happening because I started processing a trauma I really struggle with with my therapist the other day. I had a bad flashback a couple of days later. And this week is the anniversary of September 11th which is an anniversary of mine.

Have you had changes like this with your sleep? How did you get through it?

Exercise is something I don't do enough of - it may help?

I discovered fairly recently that I have sleep apnea, getting treatment for that improved my sleep quality.

Staying up until collapsing has been my nightmare management strategy for a long time. Wish I could be more helpful :/

I try to stay up late, but I still only got a couple hours of sleep. I started getting reiki treatments about 5 months ago. Since then I sleep soundly all night it's made a huge difference.

Exercise might help. I haven't tried it. I can't really exercise because I have chronic pain and injuries from a car accident. Although tonight I'm hoping I'm going to just fall asleep without a problem. I'm sitting here yawning and yawning. Maybe tonight will be better.

I'm glad reiki helped you. I bet it was great when you started getting reiki treatments and you could see a difference in your sleep. I'm hoping my insomnia doesn't last too long. It hasn't been this bad for 20 years.
