I live in Georgia. I was in the Army for 9 years. I was at Fort Drum, Fort Carson and Fort Gordon. I deployed to AFG twice: 2009, and 2011/12. 2009 was with 10th MTN and AFG round two was 2011/12. First time was six months second go round was a year.
I got diagnosed with PTSD while I was still in the Army.
I started to write out the history of how I got my diagnosis...it became obvious that it was a long complicated tale which I am woefully under qualified to organize. Here is the truncated version:
Afghans, short bursts of various forms of violence with prolonged periods of waiting here or there, home, wife, baby, dissociation, drinking, drinking, nightmares, drinking, everyone is watching me, drinking, f*ck everything, more drinking, thought this was rock bottom, shrinks, PE, went nuts, meds, kept being crazy, meds, slightly less crazy, P3, Commanders Statement, MEB, Fort Couch, GA.
So it's been about 6 months now. The VA doctor told me to take my meds, get back into counseling and go get a service dog. Well I wait for that to become a thing I wake up, pills, breakfast, TV, pills, lunch, tool around, pills, dinner, pills, lay in bed awake for 30 mins until my wife falls asleep, then TV, worry about intruders, check the perimeter of my house...and eventually pass out on the couch watching YouTube videos of this or that. Rinse and repeat.
