I had an idea to start a thread where we can each list a song that helps us in our healing process, maybe share a few lyrics (and link), why/how it helps you, and maybe some 'keywords' or something to show others if it might work for them too.
I'll start with:
"It's hard to dance with a devil on your back...
So shake him off..."
"I like to keep my issues drawn
It's always darkest before the dawn"
"How did I let it happen to me?"
And something to the effect of tearing one's heart out in order to restart.
This is
"Shake It Out" by Florence and the Machines
It helps me for a lot of reasons.
First it makes me not give a f* about singing/yelling at the top of my lungs no matter how I sound, and that is therapeutic/releasing for me. Sometimes I throw myself into the song so hard it makes me end up laughing at myself even when I feel I might never laugh again.
The lyrics about dark before dawn give me hope, because I can hear in her voice she's been in that darkest place and she sings with such confidence and beauty the fact of moving through that ugliness.
The lyrics about the devil on your back and not being able to dance because of it sort of reminds me that it's not just me that's broken or wrong or incapable of joy of love of whatever...it's the f*king devil on my back which sometimes stands for the trauma itself, the perpetrators, the baggage I've developed, etc.
The song for her is also about healing.
I do warn you I dont watch the music video because it has disturbing elements.
Keywords: letting go, getting through darkness, psychosomatic symptoms, denial, healing, getting rid of guilt, getting rid of shame, new beginnings, courage to restart
