Thanksgiving Nays

I'm a vegetarian. So I just dread the whole affair because while i am perfectly capable of eating various side dishes and dessert, one of three things will invariably happen: I'm the person no one wants to invite because they think I'll be demanding, people apologize all through dinner assuming I'm offended (which I'm not), or people use the main dish as a conversation piece to pry into and judge my life choices.

Most of my dreaded dishes are more people ruining good things I could eat by making them no longer veg, like putting marshmallows in the awesome sweet potato casserole, bacon in the green beans, or broth in the mashed potatoes. I did once have a lovely person invite me over for thanksgiving and make me a single size baked ziti complete with garlic bread since she did basically all of the above. I'm also Jewish, so I've had my share of Chinese meals for Christmas dinner over my lifetime.

My daughter is a vegetarian, so we always make sure there is a side that she can use as a main dish, plus other sides that she can eat as well. She is not vegan, so this makes it a little easier. My sister in law made a vegan nut loaf and paired it with a mushroom ragout for my daughter. I drowned my sample in turkey gravy, can't take the carni out of this vore ;)

Yeah, I do not get the negativity around those who want to be veg. My daughter is quite an accomplished cook of all things vegetarian, it is all good. Her kids are being raised vegetarian as well, they are happy and healthy. My son in law still likes his meat, so the turkey is a treat for him as there is no meat in their house. My daughter never puts him down for his choice to consume meat. She is just not cooking it. And since I like reading cookbooks like novels, I enjoy searching for new recipes for her.

Owww, once when we were still living in Spain, my mom decided that it would be a good idea to eat a cactus.
I mean yeah. You can eat cactus fruit. But she wanted to actually take the leaf of the cactus and bake it.

We peeled off the prickly part. What was left was this disgusting slimy green thing.
She baked it. It was revolting.

My mom was never good at cooking anyway though, she used to make food that would make anyone puke.

OMG. Greenbeans are the best part!!!

How can anyone not be in love with cream gravy made from bacon drippings??? :inlove:

Well, people concerned with their cardiac health, I suppose. Or waistlines. But that why we only make it thrice a year, to allow the cholesterol to recede. What I really don't understand is why anyone would make it with cream of mushroom soup instead of cream gravy made from bacon drippings.

Tofurkey!

Ok, don't get me wrong. I have nothing against vegetarians. But tofu turkey!?! I've never been one for imitations. I'm gluten free and many gluten free substitutions are just gross. Skip the nauseating substitutions and just make something good instead of fooling yourself with a soy turkey!

Lol, @FridayJones, my distaste has nothing to do with my ever expanding waistline. In my eyes, fresh green beans need nothing more than a quick steam until bright green, maybe a drizzle of olive oil and some garlic, salt and pepper, perhaps a few toasted slivered almonds. But beans and gravy, no matter how baconey and well made just doesn't cut it for me on this veg, lol. To each his own ;)

@Solara, my daughter makes vegan sausages, and while they are tasty, good old hot Italian sausage or a tasty bratwurst they ain't. And no matter how she disguises her tofu, it is still tofu. I so agree with your thoughts on tofu turkey. Blech.
