Coffee beans, meanwhile, are perfectly edible. And delicious. Just chew & swallow (or swish and make coffee in your mouth). Mmmmmmmm. Chuckling. Freaked the hell outta the squids.

Fav coffee has to be ILLY espresso with an Italian level of sugar (read: f*ckload), and Turkish.


I was a fan of that Jarhead tactic of mixing instant coffee with some chew and cramming that in the ol' cheek and gum. THAT sure as hell keeps you awake on 12/12 watches!
 
I'm with Jar. French press is the way to roll. Upon occasion I will make espresso or a cafe cubano with an old school pot.

I like it any way. Black and salty (I add about 2 twists of sea salt to my grind which takes the bitterness out) or cream and sugar. I doesn't matter. My favorite is the cafe cubano. 4 tablespoons of grind per cup in your mocha pot, mix 1/2 cup of sugar with enough of the black goodness for a thick syrup and then dump the rest of the brewed /infused coffee into the cup. This produces a 1/2 thick crema atop the goodness.

Unfortunately caffein has an opposite effect on me. I get no stimulant effect from caffein. I can down an espresso and go right to sleep. It's too bad.
 
I prefer NAvy coffee myself. I like my coffee like I like the oil I drain out of the Beetle- Thick and dark with a hit of burning!
 
The best coffee I ever had was in Baghdad called, haifa st coffee. Used to get it from the locals, I ended up drinking five pots a day though and went through DT's when I stopped. Never had such tasty coffee since.

Pissed I missed out on any Middle Eastern Coffee. True Story, they booted me off the ship just three days before what would have been my fifth deployment and my first to the world's largest cat shitter.

Now I can tell you that colombians make shitty coffee. The Cubano style coffee available in the little bodegas in Miami was a mildly similar version of what you describe, the difference being the use of molasses rather than actual cane sugar. I did have a few cups in Spain and Morocco, and they were good, but the best was in Ecuador of all places. I don't know if it is a pitifully poor third world working class thing or what, but them folks brew up some mean dark stuff that seriously puts a dozen springs in your step. The secret is coffee ground with coca leaves, o so they told me.

Truthfully, I stick by my taxicab theory-

If you want the best food, cheapest drinks, and best (ahem) companionship of the opposite sex, always ask your cab driver. They know where all the good shit is on the cheap!
