The Halloween thread

This year, I'm in charge of the Samhain service at church (we're a UU). I have been relaunching our pagan group, and the minister asked me to give the sermon (me, who hates to speak at all in front of anybody LOL). So I decided to ask the group if they wanted to do the service, and everyone did. It has taken a LOT of planning, but I think it's going to be great! I'll post pics afterward.

I’m currently working one of my go-to jobby-jobs (IE I need money, but am still symptomatic as f*ck, so need to be working in a field IDFcare about & lives aren’t on the line if I have a bad day/moment/whatever). IE I’m working the line at a badass little brewery/gastro pub.

Which is the reeeeeally long intro to I’m trying to decide what to “be” at work, this year.

115 degree heat & constant movement = no face paint (boo!)
Working around fire = nothing voluminous (leSigh, but I can live with it)
Other peoples food = I all but SHELLAC my hair back, so fun hair is out.

I’m currently thinking… Ninja? Cowboy? Pirate? Catriona sans sugar skull makeup? (Basically that’s just wearing a crown of roses, so…?). US Marshal? Viking braids?

Nothing has QUITE lit up my eyes, or blown my skirt up, yet.

It’s a quandary.

So, with the arm injuries I can't carve any pumpkins this year 🤬😤😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

My ingenious solution... in between bouts of screaming arm pain I can scoop out the pumpkin guts and cut a hole, then print on clear vinyl and stick it on the pumpkin

this way I'll have pumpkins, even if it's cheating

I don’t love All Hallows- but I don’t hate it.

I don’t like costumes that aren’t related to ‘death’ or spirituality and turn it into a mere fancy dress though I accept that’s a personal and slightly cultural thing.

I like making scary food ( though haven’t for ages) and recognising that this is the date at which the darkness to be indulged in with candles , fires and warm blankets, festive lights. The number of opportunities for mental health care and a concentration of ‘hey, take time to celebrate to stave off the blues’ dates are more marked and while they can make sadnesses greater if things feel bad - they are also very beautiful.

I like concurrent Samhain.

This weekend we’ve been dressing up- I’m tired but I’m making an effort . I think that’s the point of these things.

That's not cheating, that's ingenious!

I flippin love halloween, which for someone in the UK is a rarity, and seen as a bit odd lol.
I've decorated my porch (not that we get trick or treaters much), I just love the decorations. I've also put some decorations in my living room with candles and tealights for Halloween movie night!
I'm not a huge fan of horror films. I've become increasingly unable to watch anything too scary these past few years (not sure if that's a ptsd thing or just getting old lol), but I love a good psychological thriller. And of course, Hocus Pocus is an absolute must for me, so much so that it's become a tradition to snuggle up and watch Bette do her thing before watching the more spookier stuff later on.
I'm looking after my niece and nephew tonight and tomorrow, so I'm planning on making Halloween cupcakes with them and doing some Crafty stuff

Me as a hobo circa 1978-ish. 10 years old. 😄

Super bummed, I’ve left my job, so now I don’t get to dress up at work. I was really looking forward to that.
Really sorry to hear that. I'm not working halloween this year, and partner has just had an op so no dressing up for us either. Sounds silly because it's not like we would go to a big party or anything, but I'm gutted too because I love Halloween and had already bought an outfit etc. Made a cute wreath though, no one can stop my decorations 🤣
