I read the first chapter yesterday afternoon. Curled up in my big comfy chair with the sun on my head.

I am wondering what family secrets are going to be thrown up as we go along. The grandfathers illness was a big one, so the possibility is there for so many more.

Well I am headed to Chapter 2. Good way to deal with the insomnia and far more interesting than trying to read through tomorrows work e-mails. Need to turn off the nerd and turn on the fun!

It's seems a little slow to start, I'm finding it a bit of an effort.

It's funny a book hasn't seemed the same to me since all this crap started. I'm finding I have to re-read it to really absorb it.

Looking forward to getting back into reading, and not focusing so much on my issues.

I agree about the slow start and I'm hoping that it picks up now that we have the background information. I'll contribute more when I understand more :confused:. I'm one of those readers that likes to think ahead of possible plots... that may get me in trouble with a reading group!

Nothing wrong with foresight IMO... as long as you haven't read it, and are just guessing... makes the discussion all that better.

I think, location referenced around Bosnia / Herzegovina within the Balkans, which I am unfamiliar with.

Yes, you guys are right. I recently visted this area and I have family in the area. Also - a lot of the surnames in this book are very familiar - including mine! ;)

I found the prologue good. It established the close bond between Natalia and grandfather, and the fact that he did not shield her from the dangers in life. Even though she was so young, I believe that possibly he is preparing her for what lay ahead in the future.

In chapter one Natalia is an adult and had become her grandfather confidant to a certain extent. He knows that it is safe to tell her of his impending death. She had the strength to cope with it, following in his footsteps becoming a doctor. Yes, I think that Bako and Natalia's mother had been left out of the loop to protect them from the worry and pain.

Grandfather had lied to everybody regarding his trip. Natalia who is on her way to a medical mission at an orphanage, decides to find out why.

OMG, this is so slow.

I have read chapter 2, gosh it was long.

I thought the reactions to war, living freely and taking risks were understandable and Grandfathers stand up to the system good. When the 'hat' turned up and started laying down the law I could visualise my own family reacting that way.

Then, oh my, how may pages of the elephant and the deathless man - far too many. It just went on and on. I kept leafing to the end of the chapter to see how much more there was to read.

Chapter 3 is titled 'the Diggers', when is something going to happen?
