Im suprised it was Pulse and not Disney
I've come to this late because I've been off grid all weekend. But from what I've seen on the news I'm not surprised it wasn't Disney at all. Disney was not the target, nor were the general piblic, lgbt people were.
It's beginning to read more primarily as an act against gay men
Agreed. The links to ISIS are, as Owen Jones rightly said on Sky news tonight, a personal rationalisation and justification by a homophobe for commiting an act of terror against gay people because he personally found it "repulsive". Ideology used to justify the unjustifiable. It doesn't seem to be organised terrorism (at this point in time), rather a depraved homophobic asshole who had easy access to a gun, using that to carry out something to ease his distaste at something (gay relationships). Selfish, childish and enabled by the ease of access to guns in the US.
I don't think gun control would have done a thing. If you really want to walk into a room and kill or wound mass numbers of people, you will find a wa
I disagree. And I disagree with
@Anarchy, despite your well articulated arguments. In the uk, a law-abiding person never thinks about guns. It just isn't something you think about because there are no shootings like this (or at least they are extremely rare). The reason? Fewer guns on the street. Unregistered ones may be ten a penny but they're not actually used to the extent that they seem to be in the states. You can't walk into a gun shop and buy ammo without a license. And there are nowhere near the number of gun shops in the first place. You can't buy or import weapons online, they won't get through the postal or courier system. You can only get a gun without a license if you're already involved with criminal gangs and have the contacts. So it's leg work for these idiots who maybe fantasise about commiting these attacks. Leg work that they either haven't the resources or brains for. If someone does have the drive to do it, then of course, they'll find a way. But for the vast majority of bigoted nut-jobs? It forever remains a fantasy because it's difficukt to get the plan off the ground. And the more difficult it is, the better. You may not stop all attacks, but you will stop some and slow down the frequency of the rest (ie the successful attacks) if the weapons are harder to get hold of.
Anyone in the US can get a gun and it's not a big deal. But here, the only people who have guns are hardcore criminals, and people who've undergone the licensing process. And the military, but those weapons are so closely controlled that they're a negligible factor as far as guns circulating in the country goes.
