Travel Plans Freaking Me Out

Great advice and @ Glara thanks for mentioning makeup!!! I don't wear it but will need it for the wedding. @FridayJones good strategies. Just one question. Say I have copies of my prescriptions. If someone rips my meds off can I use those copies to refill the meds? The thought of detoxing on vacation doesn't sound appealing.

i tried to get copies of scripts just in case as well , and with painkillers they just wont give them, they will say the bottle will be adequate with the details on it, if someone rips off your painkillers, you have to file a police report otherwise they wont replace them, particularly if your out of state

what i have done in the past is ask the doc for a Butrans patch or a couple of methadone pills as back up , Butrans has a half life of 70hrs and will stop any withdrawals , the same with Methadone , although methadone has a half life of 36 hrs and a couple of pills will not cause methadone withdrawals and will stop opiate type withdrawals -

Nope! Not even in a different state, much less a different country.

What they do is prove to a doctor in an ER or clinic that you aren't drug-seeking, and gives them the exact medication & dose (patients are notorious for mixing up meds & doses), and a number to call your doctor at home to verify it's not a phony. The ED I worked in generally had between 5-10 people per night trying to scam drugs. It's nothing personal, not being believed, it's part of the job (and very few addicts "look" like addicts). So the copy just makes an easy button out of what is often otherwise impossible to very difficult situation.

It still usually takes 24 hours for an emergency refill (time zones, phone tag), which is why I break up my meds into 72hr & 24hr pieces kept seperate from my other meds. I've lost 1:3, and even 2:3 in the past for various reasons. But usually the emergency stashes are never even needed. Just save my ass those times they were needed!

I forgot to mention it... But it's usually a good idea to let your doctors office know you're going to be out of town if it's more than for just a few days. That way they get a call from Dr.Smith in Somewhere FarFarAway calling about filling a scrip for a patient who is right here in Anytown, USA... And they don't waste time trying to contact you at home to verify it's you & not someone who stole your identity. Part of the standard 24hr delay is the nurse making a reasonable number of attempts to contact you, before YourDoc signs off one FarFarAwayDoc refilling. So not only is ER doc verifying that you're not an addict, but home doc verifying that you're not an addict pretending to be you :)

Remember... This is all probably overkill. In all likelihood there will be no problem whatsoever. It's just prep work based on avoiding having BTDT, on a weekend, and have to wait 3 days while I'm being looked at suspiciously.

Chances are you won't lose your meds. Make sure they are ALL in your carry on, in their original bottles. Keep them with you on the plane, either in the under seat compartment or the overhead compartment. Don't let them force you to check that bag (make sure its small enough.....so annoying that SO many people push the limits on carry ons and get away with it.) At the hotel, put them in a safe.

The only issue is international traveling. Make sure you check ALL medications are legal to possess in that country. I've heard stories about imprisonment for carrying antihistamines I think it was....into a certain foreign country where they are illegal. (Yes, check your OTC drugs, too!)

Look at the TSA website. Its amazing what they'll let you have in your carry on. Once I forgot a pair of shears were in my backpack and they found them.....I was like OMG! But, they were under 4" long and so I was allowed to have them. Lemmie tell ya, if I wanted to use those babies as a weapon, I could have! You can even carry on things like pies. Ya, found that one when I was looking up food regulations.
