Undiagnosed Trying To Figure It Out

Hello anyone who reads this, I'm 24 years old and just looking for a place to figure out everything that's happened to me and whether or not what I'm going through is PSTD or just something else. Last halloween, I woke up to my best friend half dead, face blue and hardly breathing. She had overdosed on pills. I ran from the room to get her parents to help me after my stupid attempts to wake her up, which I know I could never do but I still tried. Her parents looked to me for answers and what to do in the situation (I was in my first semester of nursing school so they assumed I somehow knew everything) and all I could think was that she needed narcan to reverse the effects of the narcotics she took. They were afraid to take her to the hospital a matter of seconds away from their house because they didn't want her to lose her job at that hospital as a nurse. So I waited around watching her try to catch her breath for over an hour till they decided to bring her to the hospital. Instead of getting a ambulance they decided it'd be best to drive her so I had to try and lift her all her dead weight to their car and I couldn't do it. So we dragged her on a blanket to the car. I sat in the backseat of the car holding her as she still continued to fight for each breathe. It was getting worse and her breathes were coming less and less and her dad drove the car so f*cking slow that I felt like I was trapped in the car watching her slowly die. By the time we got to the hospital she was dead, she stopped breathing and I had no idea she was. The nurse saw and all she said was shit before you sprinted inside to get more people. The last thing I saw of her was her on the gurney with a nurse straddling her preforming CPR. They told us she would be okay. Her parents went back to see her and so I waited in the waiting room for a couple of minutes. Her mother came out to me, crying and told me she probably wasn't going to make it. My best friend, more of a sister to me than anyone in my immediately family was going to die. I had my sister come pick me up from the hospital and for the next 5 days I waited for her parents to tell me any sort of update, but they didn't want to tell me anything because they thought I was the reason their daughter was dying. I hardly slept those 5 days and when I did I woke up in sweats and nightmares of what happened.

The part to this story that always throws people and tells me I'm stupid for nearly 8 months later, still feeling depressed, frightened, not being able to sleep, crying at the slightest of similarities, panic attacks, isolation, and complete distain for mostly everyone; is that she lived. She lived and we don't talk anymore. I, for the longest time, felt that I was responsible for whatever happened to her and any bad things she had to deal with after waking up. Everyday for months was a battle for me not to breakdown and cry or panic at the thought, hospital, town, exit, or anything that I saw that day and a few days after.

This is the first time since it happened that I've actually spoke about my experience. I still suffer daily from panic attacks even though it's got a lot easier, but the fact I don't talk about it I know makes things worse. I just wanted to tell someone about this. I'd love to hear thoughts and theories from anyone.

Thanks

That was acute trauma but with help you can move on. The whole scene is unbelievable. I can't believe her parents didn't get her into an ambulance STAT.
What was she doing that she had narcotics? Unless you were the one that poured them down her throat, then you have zero culpability. Zero. Talk to your advisor at school. These traumatic events happen often. There must be support to help you learn to tolerate the actions of others that bring them to near death. Of course when it's your best friend it's a whole different story. Her parents handled it poorly not you.
When I was a teenager I found my sister unconscious from an overdose and I got my mother and she was more angry than terrified. She never got my sister psychological help.
You are safe as is your friend. Who knows where she's at and I'm not surprised she's isolating. Hopefully she'll get into therapy and work her problems out. Just because she's not talking now doesn't mean you're forever torn apart. If I were you I'd get a professional assessment of yourself so you can extinguish the flames racing through your body. I'm sorry you found her in such shape but thank goodness you did because she's still alive. Suicide messes families up as well as with friends.

She had been using for a long time and that's why I feel responsible because I didn't call her out on it and make her stop, but she stopped doing them as frequently and seemed like she was getting better. I just didn't know how bad it really was. She wasn't trying to commit suicide and thats messed up. She was just trying to have a good time and went to far.

I've been seeing a therapist for awhile now and I'm still fighting with it. I just hope one day I'll be okay with it and it won't bother me as much.
Thank you so much for responding it means a lot.

She had been using for a long time and that's why I feel responsible because I didn't call her out...

You are NOT responsible!!! It wasn't your job to "call her out"! Her parents would not have listened and doubtfully gotten her REAL help.
She is responsible for her own actions, and her parents responded in a horrible way! I applaud you for getting help for yourself! THAT takes courage! You couldn't have done ANYTHING different! I was a medical assistant for 25 years, and don't know if I could remember CPR, and you were barely a nursing student.

I believe that in the long term, this experience, AND your healing from it will help you in many ways down the road! PLEASE DON'T BLAME yourself, and DO NOT listen to people who criticize how long it is taking you to get past it. It was a HORRIBLE trauma to someone you loved. OF COURSE you are going to grieve the loss of her as a friend! She probably wants to forget the whole thing, and her parents have probably suggested that to "help her get past it".

You deserve happiness, and to feel free of this heavy burden. I have found that it's best to talk to your therapist only about your trauma, because no one else is trained, and are simply trying to help...but in the wrong way. The best way, is to say, "Is there anything I can do?" and leave it at that. Their opinions are just opinions.

You sound like an amazing, caring person, who WILL heal, and move forward, never repeating the same behavior. If you see someone using something that could kill them, tell them you can't be around it. Period. It's THEIR choice.

Blessings to you, "Sweet Soul".

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the above posters. You did your best to be helpful in the situation. If anyone is responsible it her parents for not acting as fast as they could. The loss of your friend either way is very hurtful.

Wishing you the best in your healing journy

Christ, she was dying on the floor in FRONT of her parents and they didn't get her help. There is some serious shit going on in that family that you have nothing to do with.

It makes sense that they are blaming you - because they refuse to see themselves. In any of this. Actually, I would say it is a blessing that you are away from them.

Who watches their daughter die for over an hour and doesn't do anything? Try if you can, to get to therapy and learn how to protect yourself from taking this type of attack on. And yes, this is an out and out attack on you.

Oh, I forgot to say WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!! You really have found a very special place where you will find support, compassion, and friends! Here, no one has anything to prove to anyone, and the comments and advice are valuable, as well as being listened to and validated!
I do hope you will stop by now and then to receive support and offer some as well. You sound like a very caring friend, who got involved with a VERY dysfunctional family!

Good luck!

Roxanne, welcome to the forums. I don't know what to say, but that sounds very difficult situation to deal with.

Gentle Hug if you need and accept.

Bringing someone back to life doesn't just erase the terror of having them die in your arms. It erases the grief of their death; not the pain, fear, & rage at their dying... Nor being wracked with powerlessness to stop it, or the regret and recriminations at not having done things differently to prevent it. Been there, done that.

Welcome to the forums.
