New but jumping right in :) awhile back I started believing it was my moral obligation to witness every horrible post landing on my Facebook page. It happened gradually and I knew logically, being constantly bombarded with all the horrible things going on in the world was making me more insane, I still convinced myself, it was the right thing to do.
I 'quit' Facebook a few months ago because I also noticed the contrast between my friends lifestyle and the atrocities were so far apart, I would find myself getting angry at how spoilt our Western culture is. I believe what was happening was distortion, in hind sight. I still get glued to morbid stories but cut my time short when I realize what I am doing.
This has helped me quite a bit. My new focus is finally about me. I have never known 'me' as corny as that sounds. It starts with your own healing, otherwise, you are no good to anyone. 'Me' is a very scary person that I have avoided for as long as I can remember (age 54 :) but I am learning there are parts I like.
So, I guess the answer is yes, TV, Internet definitely trigger. .I do not think it is healthy to be exposed to so many awful things that are out of our control. Not watching is okay and does not mean you don't care what's going on. I hide my eyes anytime there is violence on TV because it causes negative reactions. ..my anxiety is noticeably less
