Unable To Remember Nightmare

I just woke up moments ago from a nightmare. I know it was a nightmare because I literally shot out of bed. It is irritating that I don't remember a thing about it. I took a sleeping pill to fall asleep in the first place and now I can't go back to sleep. Or I should say I don't want to. Because the last time I woke up from one of these and went right back to bed I woke up an hour later screaming at the top of my lungs which caused my upstairs landlord to pound on the floor for me to shut up.

I am soaked with sweat so bad right now too, I have to change my sleep shirt. The poor dogs are staring at me I wonder if I said something in my sleep again. Sometimes I sleep talk so loud my wife things I am awake.

I guess this is what I get for trying to get into a regular sleep pattern.

It's more than likely a night terror. How long into the sleep did this happen? Nightmares and Night terrors occur during different sleep stages, in the cycle, and they are way different in their anatomy. Nightmares = you're basically paralyzed during them, so you're unable to move, and because they happen right before your normal wake-up time (in your schedule), you're more likely to remember them. Night terrors occur 30-45 minutes after falling asleep, and you're in REM. This is also the same stage when sleepwalking occurs, and sleep talking, and you're able to move/thrash around, but you're incapable of remembering the dream.

Neither is fun, but if you're waking up feeling startled or scared, it's probably a night terror. Personally, I wake up hyperventilating and I have to call someone and/or physically get up and walk around to calm down before I can get back to sleep.

Hope that's somewhat helpful.

First of all I have never heard of the differences between nightmares and night terrors. But I was only asleep for about an hour or so maybe 2.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was a night terror. They aren't fun... sorry you're having those!
