I'm not a veteran, but I do have PTSD and am presribed to 200mg of Lamictal. It has helped me a lot. A severe rash is a side effect, but is very rare(about every one out of 1000 people develop). It is usually from upping your doasge way too fast or not taking your meds right. If you don't take your Lamictal for 3-4 days straight you have to completely start your Lamictal over at 25mgs because you have a risk of developing the rash. Other minor skin irritations have been reported as a side effect, as well. But really, Lamictal has improved my symptoms greatly.
I don't disassociate as much and rarely have nightmares and nocturnal panic attacks anymore. My daytime panic attacks have been reduced too.
If you read about Lamictal, like on googlescholar you will find helpful info about it's effects on people. It is mainly prescribed for epilepsy and Bipolar Disorder 1 & 2, and has few side effects usually so it is highly recommended. The effectiveness of Lamictal outweighs the risk of the rash in my opinion. Lamictal works by reducing abnormal brain activity scientists think.
It takes a couple months to have a full stabilizing effect. You can usually start feeling it though within a week or two. If you feel you are not responding well to the Lamictal you should discuss your available options with your doctor.
I wish you the best:)
