As a civilian, i know too many veterans who haven't been heard, to "TLDR" on your post. Including a friend i knew from cadets who joined the army only to die alone and nobody to give a shit about him until he was gone.
But i do say this as a father and spouse. You said your wife is the glue that holds everything together. I know this from experience, there are some things you shouldnt keep a secret from your partner. Ive told my wife even the darkest details of my life, certain she'd never look at me the same. And you know what she did? She kept on loving me. If she means the world to you, and she loves you, then you and your wife have to have that discussion, in time, so you can share that yoke of burden. Otherwise thats like acetone to your crazy glue.
