In 1914, Joey, a beautiful bay-red foal with a distinctive cross on his nose, is sold to the army and thrust into the midst of the war on the Western Front. With his officer, he charges toward the enemy, witnessing the horror of the battles in France. But even in the desolation of the trenches, Joey's courage touches the soldiers around him and he is able to find warmth and hope. But his heart aches for Albert, the farmer's son he left behind. Will he ever see his true master again?

I took the book with me today. I commute 1.5 hours a day (one-way) and that's some pretty good time to read. Of course, I was so tired, I forgot I had the book with me till I was just about 2 more stops from where I had to get off. Will try again tonight on my trip back. Happy reading!

I have gotten as far as chapter 5 (incl.) and just want to say that on page 1 I thought I might never finish reading this (because of the author's choice of the narrator) but now I was really disappointed having to stop reading for now (due to work). This book is beautifully written and I have been touched greatly by how the author lets the reader peak into the relationship between Joey and Albert... I wish I had started this on a Saturday morning. :)

I picked this up this morning, and a few hours later I was finished. OMFG, what a seriously terrific story. Who ever picked this one out for reading, high five.

I couldn't put it down, start to finish. He experiences sooooo much, from a youth through to being captured, working for the enemy, back to the British. That author is a genius how this was written. I actually had tears in my eyes at the end when I thought it was all over.

WOW... truly inspiring book. Now I want to see the movie, hoping it would be as inspirational as the book.

This is a book I could easily read more than once.

Oh dear.
