Wellbutrin- Having A Really Hard Time Eating?

Hi! I am on my second week of Wellbutrin and I have had the weirdest shift in appetite. I used to be a pretty hungry person and was always excited about my next snack. After starting the wellbutrin, I don't think about eating, I can only stomach the idea of a few things right now (mostly nuts, yogurt, coffee, or black olives..lol I know, it's weird). I know it's unhealthy because I had an angry outburst yesterday, after it I realized it had been 24 hours since I had eaten at all and so I had some snacks. After I ate I felt less irritable as you would probably imagine.

Did anyone else go through this and if so, does it go away? I feel like the medication is helping in other areas although the first week was a lot of up and downs, lots of tears. I wonder if I should just put an alarm on my phone and force feed myself a snack of some kind every few hours until I start to feel natural hunger again.

Thanks for any ideas and thoughts for me.

Many people experience weight loss when taking Wellbutrin. My psychiatrist suggested it when I complained that the other meds we tried were making me hungry all the time. Too bad that it never seemed to be any help for me.

Its interesting to note that its also contraindicated for anorexics and bulimics. Somewhere in there is obviously something that suppresses appetite to the point that it is a concern for those who are under weight already.

If you are over weight I'd say clean up your diet and enjoy the unintended side effect.

If you aren't overweight try a low sugar smoothy that you like. Drink it every day at the same time so it becomes a habit.

Not overweight, but what woman doesn't enjoy dropping a few lol. I like the smoothie idea. I'll give that a try. Thanks!

Here is my super secret recipe for when I can't or won't eat breakfast.

Brew a strong cup of coffee. While its brewing put 1 cup of your favorite almond or coconut milk substitute in the blender. Add 2 TBS coconut oil or coconut butter. Pour the hot coffee on top and blend.

The coconut oil has lots of MCTs which help with brain function and is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying pure MCT oil.

I couldn't stomach a single food while on Wellbutrin, and would freak out in angry outbursts too. I shook constantly, probably from low blood sugar. It made my anxiety go full force, which made me sick to my stomach 24/7, which kept me from eating because everything made me sicker.

It actually went on to make me fully psychotic, and I almost killed myself. So....needless to say, I never lasted on that medication.

Whoa! I'm sorry you went through that! I'm starting to feel a little bit better on it. I feel like my anger is subsiding a bit and I'm thinking through things more clearly. Hoping the upswing continues. Curious, did you find something that worked better for you?

i know that med well been on it for decades, on of its side effects is it curbs appetite where most meds like it make you put on weight.

Some GP's will even prescribe it for weight loss because its safer than diet pills.

@DogMom

I now take a drug called Amantadine.

It's very off label and it's been a wonder drug for me. Calms my hyper driven body and senses(I likely also have a sensory processing disorder). I no longer feel like punching people, noises aren't as scary, light sensitivity is down dramatically. Touch sensitivity is better, but still needs improvement. My anxiety is down some and I can focus better as well. It seems to have dialed down my internal thermostat, so to speak.

Wellbutrin is well known for its weight neutral/appetite suppressant qualities. It is/was also sold under the name zyban for quitting smoking. It was my favorite antidepressant for counteracting weight gain from my other meds as @recoveringfromptsd said, as well as for keeping me from being depressed.

This was one of the medications suggested by my doctor, not actively taking it, and am a bit worried about this weight loss talk. I already struggle with eating and my weight and I feel like being given medication where that's an added issue, would make it worse for me. (I get so busy I forget to eat and when I do I don't eat much.)

This is a well-documented piece of info re: Wellbutrin, so if you do have disordered eating or just not much of an appetite, you might want to discuss this with your doctor before moving forward.
