Landscaping during the growing season, models and plant tissue culture in the winter. Pug dogs every day. Sunshine, sunshine, sunshine.
I wish I could do the whole zen gardening thing year round, but Nebraska is a dirty whore for winter weather.
There is just something about my bare feet in the dirt, a breeze at my back, birds singing in the trees and watching the results of hands that did horrible things produce beautiful things. Throw in a pack of smokes, some ultra strong Navy style coffee and a few pug dogs running around like the silly jackasses they are and suddenly the Beast is chained and all is right in the world, even if for just a few hours.
I have given up on vegetable gardening- too many deer here I am not allowed to shoot and eat. But for some reason perennials and native wild flowers, ferns and mosses and working on phase three of my water garden/pond/waterfall complex really makes me chill out.
God. Makes me sound like a filthy hippie. Worth it though. Plus I get to wear my Indiana Jones hat and fishing vest so I really look effective when shaking my fist and yelling at the neighborhood hellspawn, "Get off my lawn or you shall meet my tomahawk!"
