What Makes You Angry Today?

A lot of people leave the military and get jobs where there is action or where they are under stress, it's sort of what they need. They fit well into paramedics, police etc, etc. Once you have PTSD though and are professionally diagnosed with PTSD and Chronic Depression, here in Australia, you are not allowed to touch weapons and sometimes they take your licence off you.
So to find a job where you fit in is virtually impossible.

Jimmy, if you are only diagnosed PTSD can you still have your weapons? I thought you could not own firearms in OZ!!! Anyway, I have been carrying legally for over 40+ years...Since we moved to NM and got our CCP's, I only carry about 50% of the time....The wife carries hers all the time, she asked me about and I said.....well I'll just use your if needed. LOL

Short answer, yes. You may need a mental healthcare professional, say your therapist if you have one, to write a statement to the effect that you're not a danger to anyone. At least that's how it is in Pennsy. Check your local statutes.

There's some rumblings going on about disarming Vets with PTSD. Current law is if you are 100% for PTSD, you're considered incompetent and therefore precluded from owning a weapon. I had my therapist write just such a letter for me. So, it's just wait and see.

I believe that you're right Sarg, they are trying to disarm vets in general. I also know that they're trying to make an all encompassing ruling concerning vets with PTSD. Many are fighting it as PTSD may be debilitating it's different for everyone that has it. Some, shouldn't have weapons whereas others would be fine with them. It differs from state to state as well. It should be judged on a case by case basis, whether it will be is a wait and see situation.

I also get the feeling that this is about the 'right to carry' laws more than just owning a gun. Let me know if I'm wrong there. I know, for instance, that in New Jersey it's almost impossible to get a permit to carry even is you're judged as mentally sound and no police record. I have many friends there that have applied and were denied. There's no national law in regard to how states view and make laws in that regard.

I do know this, they can make any laws that they want and people that want guns will have them whether legal or not.

I read a story about a guy that transported a weapon to his new home in New Jersey. Somehow the cops found his weapon in the trunk of his car and slapped him with enough charges to send him away for decades. He got a good lawyer and got out of most of it, but it all sounded like a communist country somewhere.

They spend a great deal of their time trying to find a way to disarm ALL of America. That way, they can just roll that carpet of oppression over us.

Ptsd is an personal thing, how you can blanket and rule people out of anything because of a label is beyond me. Need to assess the individual risk and work with it

I am mad today because I interviewed with the VA for a GS4 position as a nurse aid for a VA domicillary here in Oregon - I asked the interviewer if there was any concerns they had about my suitability for the position and they said yes.

First, they had concerns saying recently separated veterans have problems working in a civilian environment and that the VA is different than the military and that we have troubles adapting.

Then she said that because I had less supervision and more responsibility in my position as a medic that she had concerns of me overstepping boundaries of scope of practice, providing care beyond my pay grade pretty much.

I calmed down and wrote a thank you letter;

"I would like to thank you and your team for taking the time to conduct the interview with me this afternoon. I appreciate the candid and honest answer to concerns you may have when I asked about my suitability to perform the position. I would like to reassure you that I understand the limitations and scope of practice that a nursing assistant operates in, and I look forward to the potential opportunity to care for my fellow veterans with dignity and respect, as well as gaining practical experience for my career learning from you and your staff."

hopefully it helps out, I really need a job.

I can't stop thinking about it. Its like she said "well I'm not saying you in general, but a lot of recently returning veterans have problems working in this setting"

I took it as I used a combat related experience in a performance based interview question and now she's judging me as being incapable of taking care of my fellow veterans. Its really getting me pissed off.

I love the VA and all those that say, 'Your best bet, Hire a Vet'. What a crock of shit. It was so 40 years ago and apparently still is today. They'll hire the important 'minority' person of the moment I'm sure. Which obviously isn't a vet.

I looked up jobs on hireheroesusa, pretty much the listings from the VA were up and truck drivers with their own rigs.

I'm not sure that the interviewer can tell me "don't take this the wrong way but you veterans don't fit in well with our organization because we're civilians", it makes me feel like there is bias and discrimination due to my background, and I felt that the "problems reintegrating" remark was a tongue in cheek stab at potential PTSD issues (which I did not say I was diagnosed with).

Either way, I'm still pretty worked up about it. I thought I would be a shoe in for a job taking care of my fellow veterans, but apparently because I'm a veteran they're concerned I won't get along and be able to work with their staff. The ironic thing is I hated going to the VA for my own health care, especially treatment for PTSD, because these fat old ladies have no clue what they were talking about and just nodded and told me they understood when there is no f*cking possible way that they could.
