Sadly that's how it works. I have met people that stopped payments just to make things harder for the ex. There isn't much that I know of that you can do.

Usually that happens when there's a court agreement/order that one spouse is responsible for payments while the other spouse keeps the car. ie. Jobless stay at home mom keeps the Buick while her wealthy philandering ex-husband is supposed to make payments. It's not uncommon when there's an alimony agreement, especially if one spouse had been financially dependant on the other.

But to stop making payments on a car that you have and probably need just because you're butthurt?

There's a reason he's the laughing stock of my circle. Whenever we do something dumb, we talk in this retarded voice and say "I'm **** **********." (insert his name)

I hear ya. When I got a divorce, my ex promptly totaled his car and first thought I was going to buy him another! Then when he tried to get the insurance company to pay off the loan, which of course was in my name, they refused! You see, he neglected to re-register it in his own name. After the insurance company called me and I explained the situation, they called him back and told him he would have to register the car in his name before they would pay off the loan. It cost him money because he had to pay the property tax plus registration on it before the insurance company would pay it off!!!! I got a good laugh over that one. Plus the insurance co then put a letter in my credit file saying I was not responsible to the delinquent loan. Maybe you can get something similar, if you have divorce decree, you can go to the loan company and tell them he got the car in the settlement and as a result he is supposed to make the payments. When he doesn't, they should put a letter in your credit file saying you were not responsible for the default of the loan. Good luck with it.
