Sadly that's how it works. I have met people that stopped payments just to make things harder for the ex. There isn't much that I know of that you can do.
Usually that happens when there's a court agreement/order that one spouse is responsible for payments while the other spouse keeps the car. ie. Jobless stay at home mom keeps the Buick while her wealthy philandering ex-husband is supposed to make payments. It's not uncommon when there's an alimony agreement, especially if one spouse had been financially dependant on the other.
But to stop making payments on a car that you have and probably need just because you're butthurt?
