What The **** Was That?

Ok, so this is a new one for me. I've had sleep disturbances such as insomnia, sleep walking, and sleep paralysis before but I've never had this before. Does anyone know what this is? I had been sleeping for a while. I woke up half way and was in that kind of half asleep state. My cats as usual were cuddled around me in my bed. Suddenly, I got this thought in my head like I should get them away from me so that I wouldn't accidentally hurt them while thrashing around uncontrollably. I couldn't understand why I thought this because I had never had seizures or anything else that would cause me to thrash around uncontrollably at any point in my life. Also, my body felt totally normal and relaxed and not like I was about to loose control of it. Then all of a sudden, I completely lost control of my body. It began to thrash around in the bed uncontrollably. I also had a strange moaning sound coming out of my mouth that at first I didn't even realize was coming from me and that I also couldn't control. My cats immediately freaked out and ran like hell. I wasn't upset or in discomfort. It really didn't bother me like it should have. I didn't feel much of anything. After it was over I just kind of shrugged it off, rolled over and went back to sleep. That's not really a normal reaction for me totally awake. I must have still been in some altered state to be so nonchalant about it. The next morning I woke up and thought, "what the **** was that?" Anyway, does anyone have any insight on this? I tried googling and found no answers. The only prescription med I'm on is zoloft. I also take zzzquil over the counter but my doctor said that was ok to keep taking with the zoloft. Would it cause something like that? Has anyone else had something like this? Thanks,

Wow, that is scary! I would go to the doctor and get whatever tests he or she might recommend. I've never had anything like this. I've tried Zoloft, but it made me super dizzy, so I got on something else. Now I'm on Celexa. I've tried zzzquil, too, but it didn't help my insomnia, so gave up on it. Unisom works better on me, at least for a couple days a week.

There is something called parasomnia, which I have diagnosed myself with because I could not even explain it to a dr. let alone expect anyone to understand. I am neither fully asleep or fully awake. I can recall having an upsetting dream, believing it is reality at the time, and seeking help.....but then it passes. What I learned later is that I called my oldest daughter for help and left her a detailed message of what I had dreamed. Of course my account was not that it was a dream, I was very convincing that this event was happening right now. She listened to her message much later and was very upset. Often people are violent during this, not deliberately. They may dream they are playing football and dive out of bed and injure themselves or others. Seems that most behavior other than sleep walking fall into that category. Have heard of people cooking and eating or having sex on Ambien sleep medication. I was on meds and have a traumatic brain injury that I attribute a lot of things to. Happened at least 2 times if not more...kind of scares me but don't think it has happened for awhile...not sure....isnt that scary since I call people.

Interesting that you mention traumatic brain injury. I had multiple instances of severe head trauma from child abuse that I've never had medical care for. I figured since it was decades ago that there's no point in seeing a doctor about it now but I guess this could be related. I should probably get specialist to see. Thanks

What I experienced is really weird stuff. I told my therapist about it and she reminded me that in only one visit with her of like a hundred, I seemed in an altered state. She asked if I had taken xanax or something, but I had not done anything out of ordinary. She is addiction specialist as well and said that she could not put finger on, but I just didn't seem to be all there. I don't think I was, but I have experienced this too many times, a little different than episodes right out of sleep state, but she seems to think there is some similarity. Nothing we can solve.
