Research What Therapy Has Worked For You - Online Survey

I went to the survey & clicked on the link for their Confidentiality Declaration and the link didn't work. I wanted to read it to see how the company doing the research proposed to keep my personal details confidential. As the link wouldn't open it put me off.

This is the error message I got:

The requested URL /gmfweb 2007/confidentiality.htm was not found on this server.

I too would recommend removal of any identifying or personal factors. I'll be happy to help in any way can, however.

Cheers
Philip

I filled it out and did the survey. I got two emails from him: that was all very nice. He promised to share the results of his research. There was a subtle - not exactly a sales pitch, but a suggestion that I go to his website and that his program was highly successful and rapid at curing chronic PTSD.
SO - I looked at the website. You can order the program - it's an 8 week thing. Costs a lot. I forwarded the emails and weblink to my psychiatrist who told me that while he believes one day I will be cured, it isn't going to happen in 8 weeks no matter how many thousands of dollars I might pay.

I'm sorry I find this very hard to believe. A cure in 8 weeks. What about a whole life time (of horrific events). I have been seeing a psychiatrist or 20 years and he has helped me through some tough times, and saved my life after several suicide attempts.

Chronic PTSD takes years to get over, if at all. Everytime you have to face another crisis be it, a death, suicide, failed relationship or so forth you tend to fall into a hole. All your self doubts, fears and feeling of worthlessness resurface.

The only way you could possibly cure chronic PTSD is to have your memory erased, or a brain transplant........... :cautious::laugh::confused::rolleyes:

*snort!* I agree and would gladly offer up my own brain for immediate removal/replacement. Yah, an alleged cure in 8 wks? I don't know if it's acheiveable - but I doubt it. I've been to therapists for 30yrs and you're right Loloma...with every trigger, I get flung back into the hole.

To me, those kinds of claims smack of someone (who has never suffered from PTSD) telling others who have how it is. It's like a person who has never had depression telling someone else with depression that you can just snap out of it if you just put your mind to it. Unless you've been there, how can you really know what it's like?

PTSD sufferers aften don't seek out useful help anyway.

Oh. If I may be so bold, I must call bullsh*t on this last sentence which I find inherently offensive and judgemental. Sure some may not seek out uh, "useful help" but many of us have sought what we consider to be useful help from dozens of places; such as cognitive behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, Gestalt, Jungian therapy, hypnotherapy & psychoanalysis ... not to mention holistic modalities such as naturopathy, homeopathy, Bowen, yoga, meditation, sound-wave therapy, floatation tanks...then of course there's EMDR & NLP (which I haven't tried yet)...the list is endless. Some works, some doesn't. It's a very individual thing.

I would like to see a list of what the author considers to be "useful" help or non-useful help
Perhaps the only help considered to be useful his own.

I'd like some clarification on that.

Once you've crashed and burnt it takes a long time just to stabalise, before you can even begin to work through your issues. It's like someone who's been in a serious accident and has broken arms and legs. First the damaged limbs are put back together in a cast so the healing begins. In most cases many years down the track, these same people end up with arthritis and other problems. When the weather turns, you often hear them complaining of the pain they feel from the previous injuries.

What makes the brain any different!! Without our brain and heart we cannot function. Cognitive therapy does work for PTSD, in a lot of cases. Without a brain we cannot feel. It's like what comes first "the chicken or the egg" theory. We all know how the brain works, it sends messages to the rest of the body. If the circuitry is damaged the messages become confused, resulting in erratic thoughts and behavior.

It's not a month or two at the gym nor a miracle cure to get over your weight problem.

Yup, I agree. That's why the notion of an 8 week fix seems unrealistic. Granted, unless I try it I cannot know for sure - but the fact that it costs a fortune is unreachable for me. I also feel that asking people to complete a survey about ptsd on a site where that same company coincidentally mentions their own miraculous 'cure' for ptsd just a bit ...well, inappropriate I guess. I don't mean that in any horrible or rotten way - it's just something that doesn't sit well with me, personally  I hope that if others try the 8 wk course that it really does work for them :)

I know the brain can recircuit itself - but I also know it takes years typically.

My psychiatrist looked at the guy's emails and website and called it BS.

After viewing the website, my overwhelming feeling is that this person is a quack, I certainly wouldn't give him my email address and I don't see why he would need it for his research. Actually, he needs it to send you spam, hoping you will buy one of his books or other media.

This is his own blurb about himself:

Who is Gary Johnston?
Gary is a Melbourne, Australia based stress and change therapist specialising in personal and corporate change and stress management strategies. His life long passion for research into the mind and it's relationship with the body and with the universe has created an amazingly clear perception of how to make change at an unconscious level.

He began studying hypnosis when he was 9 years old. This expanded into in depth studies of psychology religion, psychophysics and metaphysics that has lasted another 45 years and is ongoing. The interest expanding rapidly to include other areas of the physical body, spending nine years in research laboratories at Melbourne University's Austin Hospital campus and Latrobe University.

Formal studies of Clinical Hypnosis and NLP during the late '80's and early '90's let to a period of teaching hypnotherapy and psychophysics at Melbourne's Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science. His clinic work continued during the 1990's with his own Stress Management clinic Quantum Mind-Body, achieving startling results for his clients.

Gary's unique approach to therapy involves understanding the methods his clients mind is using to produce the problems that present. By understanding the unconscious perceptions that present, a custom therapy is produced designed especially for each client.

Gary holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and is a Master Timeline Therapy Practitioner.
He is a member of:
  • The Australian Academy of Hypnotic Science,
  • The Australian Association of Clinical Hypnotherapy and Psychotherapy,
  • The Timeline Therapy Association (USA)
  • The Australian Integrative Medicine Association.
  • The International Society of Traumatic Stress Studies.
He is on the Executive of the Council of Clinical Hypnotherapists and is completing a Masters Degree of Applied Social Science.
He is also currently writing a thesis and manual on the Treatment of Phobia, Panic Attacks and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Abra-melin Clinic and the Abra-melin Secret?
Gary's called his new clinical practise the Abra-melin Clinic. Abra-melin was a 14th century magician of wide repute as being a powerful magician. The fables Merlin was based on the stories of his successes. Gary was often told that his therapies are like magic! Whilst there is no magic in them, I'm sure Abra-melin would have been proud of the results! :)
